Last night I stayed up far too late rereading a few of my favorite fanfics. I love being a part of the fanfic community and I'm constantly amazed by what people write and create and that other people appreciate my writing. I'm going to highlight a few of my favorite fics, ones that I keep coming back to.

Psmith Giantslayer, which is a fic that combines Narnia and P.G. Wodehouse's Mike and Psmith books. Thanks to this fic, I discovered the Psmith books which this author nails in terms of tone and I always adore Narnia stories that look at what happens after and how Narnia echoed later in the Pevensies' life.

Care and Feeding, an October Daye fic that I adore because it shows Quentin and Raj being dorks and friends together.

An Ace Up the Sleeve, a Wylan/Jesper fic that is hot and the writer captures the tangled mess of relationships that makes Six of Crows so good.

Going Dark, a Slings and Arrows fic that perfectly gets the mess of theater life and feels like a couple of episodes of the show.

Tomorrow (there'll be more of us) which is a Force Awakens fic about the impact that Finn has on stormtroopers. The amount of world building in this fic is mind blowing.

Fake it 'til you make it, one of my favorite Check Please fics starring Lardo, Shitty and the fake relationship trope done to a tee.

Like Butter on Toast, a Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries fic where Dot figures out and goes after what she wants.

College and Family, a thoughtful and beautiful Lilo and Stitch fic about Lilo and Nani as sisters.

Did Not Do the Research, a Princess Tutu fic that shows why fact checkers, a job I do, are so important.

Today I did one of my goals for yesterday and posted on my librarian blog; What I don't have to explain: Yuletide and Chessiecon. This post has been in my thoughts for a long time but it happened to coincide well with the youth media awards and I feel like I put across my thoughts in a way I like.

The State of the Union was powerful, I felt like he's done a lot and now I'm watching Hamilton videos on youtube and on Thursday I'll see Fiddler on the Roof. Words have such power and speaking them to audiences changes the chemistry in ways that I love.

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

In your own space, tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom.

For me, this is all about character, if I believe that there are people who feel true and a world that does the same then I'm hooked. Just this year, I fell into Sense8, first season of Friday Night Lights, and was reminded how much I adore musical theater fandoms like Les Mis and Guys and Dolls with Hamilton, always Hamilton. There are others but these ones come to mind first. Honestly, I haven't watched the second season of Friday Night Lights because I don't know if I'm ready for what's going to happen to the characters. Its the double edged sword part of how I love fandoms, I care so much that I sometimes hold back for fear of what happens to them.

Though the times when the creators just land it like Seanan McGuire with the newest October Daye books where it breaks my heart but I love it, I want all the fic and meta. Star Wars too, I started falling back in love with Star Wars thanks to first the X-Wing novels and then the Clone Wars series which I'm now rewatching and its the depth of it all. If there's a larger world and characters I can wonder about then I'll go into fic.

This has been a good year in fandom for me, I keep remembering a new fandom that clicked for me like Check Plase! or Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries then Yuletide goes, look, you're not alone. This is one of my more rambling answers but for me, it all comes down, do I care, do I want to know more?

I like this day's challenge as it connects to one of the reasons I do the [community profile] snowflake_challenge, which is to find more like minded people.

Day 08

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

I did this by doing some commenting on earlier posts and one day. I plan on doing more and this is pushing me to read more fics.

At the moment, life is pretty good. I wandered around some favorite shops today and yesterday arranged my New York trip. The weather is cold and I love it, this is how winter should feel. Also I'm enjoying the Snowflake Challenge a lot, its a good way to get me doing as the year begins.

Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!" If you feel so inclined, leave a link to the fanwork you left feedback for so others can check it out.

This one is easy for me as if I enjoy a fic, I leave a comment and kudos but it gave me a push to go back into the Yuletide archives and read fics I hadn't before.

I hadn't realized how much I needed this weekend until it was over. Its been far too long since I was in person surrounded by people who understood my love of some books and fandom. I needed this and the weekend was amazing. I have lots of detailed thoughts as the panels were far better than I expected and I want to look deeper into them. The reason I wasn't online was because the hotel wifi didn't like DW, but it liked LJ and Tumblr, that was odd.

High Points: Tamora Pierce-I want to grow up to be as sure of myself and giving so few fucks about what the rest of the world thinks as her. I went to her reading for an hour and answering questions, sat behind her as she listened to Seanan McGuire and Ursula Vernon talk, saw her bored at a badly run YA panel and got her signature and wow, amazing lady.

Seanan McGuire-Still awesome and funny and I love her joy in reptiles and her conversation with Ursula Vernon was a high point of the weekend. Hearing her sing with Lady Mondegreen blew me away. I've done chorus singing roles so when three people can make their voices do what they did, I bow down.

Meeting Batya, Alex and Lee, I was shy on Friday and Lee saw me and went, I know you, let's talk and I needed that. The long conversation on Sunday with Batya and Alex was a great moment of oh yes, you're my people.

Every random conversation I had at lunch, in the Art Show, in the Atrium, in a panel when I was brave and went let's see what happens. I'd forgotten how easy it can be to talk to people who speak the same language.

I'm even more determined to find a way to move to a city where there are people I know and I can get back to figuring out me on my own terms.

The dealers and the art, I need to share pictures of some of my finds including gifts but some treats for myself.

Music-Chessiecon is a con built on music and I didn't have the entire experience because I went upstairs before the Messiah on Saturday night. The music was everywhere and while I didn't participate I loved it. There were some weird moments. During the Lady Mondegreen concert, an older woman sitting next to me sang along. Not just during refrains but actually singing the I think soprano part. I didn't say anything as I don't know the etiquette and joining in at times was encouraged. It was weird to me and I hope didn't mess up whatever recording was happening because they were fantastic.

Truly it all came down to finding my people. Not having to explain fanfic or roleplay but instead have the question be what do you do, who do you read and write? I feel more like me and I need to get back to living in that kind of space.

I like the question today for [community profile] snowflake_challenge as its an angle I hadn't thought about before.

Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed.

What constantly surprises me about fandom is how those moments of oh, wait, you like that too never, ever get old. Also all the ways that people will translate their love of fandoms and since the love and care comes through, I find myself going, I like this too.

One of the best examples of this is how a group of my friends have shown me how wonderful a good AU can be especially based on Teen Wolf. AUs are something that I normally like the idea of more than the result like the amazing photosets that circulate of Pacific Rim AUs or Avengers' AUs but I don't really read them. I don't even write them that often since I usually get pulled into various details and then the fic never gets finished. So many of my works in progress are various AUs including at least two Pacific Rim ones. Also since I do panfandom RP which is basically all about AUs, I don't always feel as much as a pull to write them.

Yet whenever a Teen Wolf AU that's recced by this group of friends pops up, I always follow the link and find myself impressed. Some of them really stick with me, I'm currently reading a contemporary romance about band life and it has me thinking about a Rock Star Teen Wolf AU since they both show this world I don't know and found families plus music.

Its windy and cold today and the world is being scary once more. Keep warm and safe everyone.

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge is one that I hadn't really thought about before though I know my character type for RP.

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs.

Families and friendship, the kinds that are difficult and that are chosen by the characters. In stories, the ones I love are where you can see people coming together and going, oh, you get it. I also love seeing the domestic contentment that happens when you've found your people and aren't off saving the world. This is one reason that the new Flash television show hooked me so quickly as its all about who do you trust, who do you love and who helps you become a better person. I love it when these relationships are poked at too such as Charles and Raven's relationship throughout the two newest X-Men movies. That being a found family is a complicated and never easy place and when writers go into that, it makes me happy. The bumps and troubles make when it works so much sweeter.

A few of my fandoms that hit this are October Daye, Incryptid, Hexwood, Magid Series, Chrestomanci, Leverage, the Raven Cycle, Robin Hood, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, MCU, X-Men.

This Yuletide was full of a lot of fics that were all about these created families.

Impulse Control about the after of Hexwood.

Eyewitness Account that hits all that I love about The Flash as we see everyone understanding and watching out for each other.

It Takes a Village, a wonderful Vorkosigan fic about planning the wedding and seeing all the people around Ekaterin and Miles.

Ready or Not, a Fangirl fic that's all about finding your own tribe.

A Quiet Night, domestic fluff of October Daye from the point of view of May.

The Eighth Bell, a post-canon Old Kingdom fic where everyone redefines themselves and learns to go forward.

Honestly, I could link my entire reading history on Ao3 to answer this but these are my recent favorites. I'm going to end by linking a wonderful Leverage fanvid that also captures found family so well.

A question

More things are getting done today. I feel quite accomplished as I created a gmail account that's tied to my actual name for sending to jobs. I'm working on what else I might want to send to it. One reason I don't want to disentangle all the threads of my personal and professional life is I don't think its possible and I want to teach about how this is becoming the norm. How online our hobbies and all of our connections work together and help us. From my current job, I know what a difference it makes to a kid to say, oh you're talking about Doctor Who or let me argue Marvel movies with you or I get Twitter. I want to harness that but its still a learning experience.

Along the same lines, I'm realizing it might be a good idea to finally get myself a tumblr so that I can follow everyone. This will be purely for the pretties and I'm trying to figure out a good name. I have no idea but want something I haven't had before.

I needed today as well to get my head in order, the sun even decided to come out after it rained and even briefly snowed.

Please leave suggestions a tumblr name.
