Poetry and more Words
Dec. 12th, 2011 10:08 pmI'm feeling productive as I've been getting some words out there. Yesterday I wrote a gift fic for
thebattycakes, it's a William Evans and Bill Pardy fic and might end up being a part one. Today I also posted a poem on my librarian blog called Recipe for a Librarian.
This little meme was just posted on
wanderlustlover's journal and I think it's wonderful.
Tell me about a story I haven't written.
And I'll give you between one and three sentences from that story.
Now I'm going to do two more rounds of the five words' meme, which keeps getting me writing about things dear to my heart.

Michigan
I'm currently living in Michigan as I search for a job and I've enjoyed my time in Ann Arbor. It's a fun town but Michigan is a state that breaks my heart whenever I start to look closely to it. Everyone here is nice but I've had times when I was driving around when all the scars of the recession were so clear. Last summer when I was driving to an interview, I got lost and pulled off an exit and it felt like being in a ghost town. I'd ended up in what was once a fairly prosperous small town or suburb but now it was ruins with a few people living there. Yet I've also gotten lost and found myself in beautiful farm country, where things were clearly growing. I hope I have time to do some more exploring of the north of Michigan as there's so much here.
librarianship
Being a librarian is a career that once I started thinking about it, fit me perfectly. I've always loved the public library where I grew up and I had a summer job at the Swarthmore college library. Then when I graduated I volunteered at the Swarthmore Public Library, had an internships at a museum library and later did some archiving for Swarthmore college. After I'd returned from New Zealand and was feeling hit by the recession and unsure of how to make a life for myself, I thought of all those jobs and had that moment of duh, I'm a librarian. I find this an exciting time to be a librarian as there are incredible discussions going on about publishing, diversity and what reading means.
James McAvoy
Before I started at Milliways, I had a hard time knowing who I would play. It took a conversation with
asherbadaku to make me realize that I wanted to play Will Scarlett but he needed a face. I looked at red headed models and they weren't right and somehow ended up with James McAvoy and had that Aha sense. Since then, he's become an actor I follow and enjoy. He's one of those actors who will take so many different parts and will always be good in them even if the movie or tv show isn't that good. I kind of like that he flies under a lot of people's radars, because it means he's going to keep doing good stuff. This past weekend I introduced
dodger_sister to his Shakespeare Retold MacBeth and was impressed and totally pulled in by him.
mythology
I've always loved mythology. A big part of that was when I was growing up I had a beautiful book the Greek myth which I was always reading. I love storytelling as well and when I figured out I was a storyteller then I tried to read books of mythology. There's a lot I haven't read but I'm fascinated by these stories that carry through various cultures.
books
I'm a fast reader and a rereader so I spend my life surrounded by books. At any one time I will have a book by my bedside table that I'm rereading, usually a classic mystery, a book in my bag that could be anything and then there's all the stuff I read online. My floor has stacks of books and I need more bookcases and to sell some of my books to the best used bookstore ever so I can get more.

Robin Hood
All of my love for Robin Hood comes from one book, Paul Creswick's Robin Hood illustrated by N.C. Wyeth, which is available for free online here with the illustrations. I read this when I was in elementary school and the first pieces of fanfiction I ever wrote were about Will Scarlett. The first story I ever told in a talent show was of Will's hanging. Robin Hood is the story that I could easily rewrite my own version of it and for
milliways_bar pretty much have with a combination of various sources. It's hard to explain why it works for me, it just does and interpretations that don't work for me bother me. I can be terribly picky about Robin Hood because I love it so much.
education
I grew up on a small college campus and both my parents are teachers. My father has taught courses in psychiatry and I've always wanted to teach. In college I considered getting a teaching certificate but the problem with most education problems is that what courses you take tend to be fairly restricted. The same thing was true of the school library media program one Michigan and that made me sad. Yet I think being a librarian is a better way for me to teach, because there are so many types of instruction and education within a library and I might end up a private school librarian. I love sharing knowledge and awakening a love of learning.
travel
Brother Cadfael defined himself as a vagus, a wanderer and I feel this way myself. I love having my home that's my anchor and at the moment I have two places I consider home; in Ann Arbor and in Delaware with my parents. These safe harbors give me the freedom to explore and go I wonder what's out there. When I was studying in Athens, I liked wandering the city and the fact that if you took the metro to Piraeus, there were people ready to help you get to any island you wanted. I've traveled with few plans and lots of plans but I like having fewer plans since that's how you discover the world. My next trip that I'm looking forward to is driving from Ann Arbor to Lewes for the holidays.
kindness
I'm honored to have this word associated with me. I try to be kind whenever I can, because hurts ripple out. I know that I don't always succeed at being kind, but I try. When I was younger I went to an amazing summer program where we learned about feedback and how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. That experience combined with growing up in a household where we tried to figure out what was behind other people's actions and pain made me want to try to be positive to the world.
gaming
I first started gaming when I was at the summer program mentioned above where this amazing guy from Austria ran a D&D campaign. This game was set up in such a way to be the perfect introduction to RP for me as his focus was on characters and interactions. I was able to start a couple levels up from normal because I created a strong backstory. That character also is one that every time I RP D&D I make a version of her; a half-elf bard named Gwyn. I've played her in all sorts of places and I learned the joy of what's possible with RP. At the end of high school, my group started a Vampire LARP, which honestly could have been a sitcom with all the in and out of character drama. Other games happened around the edges and in college, I ran RP games and that was how I found out about Milliways. Before my third year in NZ, Danii who had been trying to get me to play in Milliways for a few months convinced me to give it a try. I was completely caught by how LJRP works and went from one character to I know have ten.
I miss LARPing because I loved that chance to get dressed up, but I also miss theater. Roleplaying combines for me the best of storytelling, acting, writing and collaboration between people. I've never done much of any other sorts of gaming. In high school, my friends played video games but I was the only girl as the guys played Goldeneye and whenever I was given a chance I'd run into walls. I was good at Super Smash Brothers but the video game medium didn't pull me in at all. I also am such a casual gamer, all those flash games, hidden object games, time management, time wasting games I love them. I kind of love how there keep being more ways to be a gamer.

Date: 2011-12-13 08:04 pm (UTC)William felt the door shift and moved to get more of his body between it and their exit. Once he was sure it wouldn't close again he called out, "Thalia, how much longer are you goin' to be?"
Her voice echoed from within the secret room as she said, "What's the Germanic rune for sword?"
"Why would I know that?"
She sighed and grumbled, "Because I taught it to you, oh that's it."
There was a clicking of gears as something was opened and Willi dared to feel relieved at least for the moment. It wouldn't last but at least she was able to open the compartment.

Date: 2011-12-15 02:37 am (UTC)I have this huge Mythology book, basically an encylopedia, that you should check out next time you are down. It's been years since I read any, but I went through a phase when I was like 14/15.
Has anyone ever written a Robin Hood from Will's POV? Because stories change quite a bit depending on who is telling them and I think that is interesting.
My little brother just found, in really good condition, our original D&D gaming books, all in hardcover. I can't wait to see what all was in the bin of our old rpg stuff.
I forgot, I was going to have you bring your new boots down when you came. I have such a thing about shoes/boots and they sounded awesome - I kind of wanted to see them.

Date: 2011-12-15 02:45 am (UTC)Joe/Billy fic would be fun and I could see them so much. Maybe someday I'll write my Will Robin Hood, I have two stories up on Ao3 of his take on it.
Ooh the mythology book sounds so cool. I'd love to see it and gaming books are the best. There's a newish gaming shop on State Street that has old gaming books including oWoD books that make me so nostalgic.

Date: 2011-12-15 03:10 am (UTC)Well, like because the angst wasn't enough, how much more would Joe be broken about Billy if they had been lovers once? Yep, I'm that twisted. I was totally thinking it while we were watching the movie.
I don't know what we'll decide to do with the D&D books, but it'll be fun to just look through them again when he brings them in.

Date: 2011-12-15 03:11 am (UTC)Well, I did take a picture of them that I'll upload soon as oddly I can't find them online.
