ceitfianna: (Wellington Roses)

I was going to do a post with lots of pictures, but the scrapbook feature seems to be down and photobucket is being slow and annoying. So I made an icon out of my favorite picture I took today.

This is the third year I've been in New Zealand and I saw these roses when I was walking up to the Victoria University Library to return some books and it just took my breath away. The smell was lovely and they were just three all perfect there together. I've always loved roses and believed a bit that sometimes we stumble upon signs, for me this felt like the right time to see this.

Before I'd taken the cable car up the hill, I'd stopped at this wonderful stall with this kind man who sells beautiful paua jewelery and bought myself a ring. While talking to him I realized that for most of the big things in my life, rings have been a part. For a bit of context, I love jewelery, I'm currently wearing four bracelets that I put on every morning and I have a huge collection of necklaces and even of rings.

Yet I tend to wear only one ring at a time, I'm currently wearing my Randolph-Macon Woman's College ring, the school seal is on it in onyx and the ring white gold. I saved up money to pay for about half the price of this ring and since my two first years gave it to me in the first half of 2001, I've only taken it off when I sleep.

When I was walking and saw this lovely paua ring, simple with a round shell on it, which is similar to one I almost bought my mother for Christmas but decided I didn't have the money, it just felt right. I tried it on and had a huge amount of trouble getting it off, I have slender fingers and good sized knuckles, one reason I don't wear rings a lot, in hot weather they're annoying.

So now I have this ring and I was talking to the owner about transitions and how I'm moving on from New Zealand and felt right to have a ring for the incredible three years I've spent here. Well this is a bit more rambly than I expected it to be and tomorrow I'll post the picture, also rugby supporters are yelling outside my window.

Those roses sound beautiful, and I'd love to see more New Zealand pics when/if you get a chance!

I'm a big fan of rings too, though I haven't worn any lately. My fingers tend to swell and shrink (I have almost perpetually cold hands, then I'll do a bit of physical activity or get nervous or something and they're all hot and uncomfortable) so that's not so conducive to ring-wearing. I'm also missing my favorite ring, which was a silver ring with a griffin on it that my mom gave me. I seem to have lost it and it's been driving me crazy, especially as my mom always threatened to swat me if I lost it (a friend of hers made it for her in college, so it was one of a kind). I actually have recurring dreams about finding it -- had one last night, in fact. And there's always a point in the dream where I realize I'm going to wake up and the ring won't be there.

ANYWAY (talk about rambly!) I'm glad you'll have all these wonderful memories of New Zealand! I'm sure she'll be sorry to see you go, but Pennsylvania will be happy to have you back. :D Btw, this is a bit random, but I've been meaning to tell you about this Scottish and Irish music festival (http://www.eohebrides.com/events/index.cfm?EventID=316). It's at the Valley Forge Convention Center, Feb 15-17. Thought you might be interested in that... though now that I mention it, I think you're not coming home until the 16th or so?
