Summary Due to what she is, Kait has never had scars, but she has memories and with Sameth remembers and heals.
She’d never had a scar, her body healed too quickly, but she knew where they might be. The knitting of bone and skin after fights and falls marked them in her memories. Whenever old men talked of knowing when it would rain due to an old injury, she would shake her head at having your body hold onto everything.
There were days when Sam stood too long and his thigh began to hurt, he’d limp into bed and she’d trace the faint pucker of the healed wound. Charter magic left few scars, but Sam seemed to hold too many exceptions, the burns on his wrists, his sword wound, reminders of what he had lived through. On nights when sleep came slowly for both of them, she would trace his scars as he talked about whatever she asked him to. Some nights it would be how the Charter worked, she still felt unsure of her welcome in its spicy warmth, but he showed her gateways and promised that she belonged. Other times, she cried and laughed as she told him of all that she had lost and he would never know or be a part of, gone beyond Milliways, locked away forever from her, yet still within her. Then he would kiss her as if she would break before holding her, he never made promises, not like Ry had, he was not a man of words. Instead he would be with her and they would both find peace for a time.
