Summary Written for [personal profile] ashen_key's birthday, she requested Kait, Sam and court. This is what came out of it. Kait and Sam prepare for their first formal state dinner and Kait muses on what's changed for her.

As Kait smoothed her dress and looked at herself in the mirror, she smiled and found she was looking forward to this first state occasion as Sameth’s betrothed. She and Ellimere had planned the dinner and the dress while warm enough for the Old Kingdom still held hints of the life she would not return to. Roses were twined with castles in the embroidery and around her neck she wore a rose necklace Sam had made for her, not the one he made years ago when they first knew each other. That one had been lost as surely as the door to her world but this one is for the future, a gold bud which opened into the full bloom of a rose at her touch. Her hair has been done in the simpler style of the Old Kingdom, braided and looped with ribbons that Sam had bespelled to shine more than normal.

She looked over at him, dressed more as the prince than she had ever seen to the point of having a circlet in his hair and a pressed and clean surcoat. Though he was fiddling with the circlet that was slightly tangled in his curls and she walked over to take his hand, “Stop that, it looks like it should.”

“It does?” He sounded so worried that she kissed him after setting the circlet just so, “Yes, quite perfect. Now it’s time to show ourselves to the court.”

His smile warmed her as he stood up and took her arm in his and held her close for a moment, carefully though as to not harm her outfit.

Then they started down from his tower room towards the main castle hall, when they passed through the family study, Ellimere greeted them with a smile, “Kait, you look perfect. Mother and Dad are downstairs but I wanted to come down with you. Sameth, stop slouching, it makes your surcoat rumple.”

Kait allowed herself a smile at them, there were still hurts but of late, Sam and Ellimere were starting to seem more like the siblings they are than the bundles of hurt they’d been when she arrived.

Sam did as he was told and stood up straighter, “There, is that better?”

Ellimere gave a nod that Kait had learned was how she dealt with the world, approving or disapproving of all around her, “Yes, that will do and now we can go down.”

Kait stood straighter as they walked down the curving steps to the hall where the Old Kingdom waited to meet her formally. Though the trappings were different and this was a smaller court, it felt like returning to what she had been trained for. Here she would remain beside Sam and help to tend and shape the Old Kingdom as his wife.
