Canon Love
Aug. 20th, 2011 02:17 pmI just spotted this meme and I like it. I'm about to head out to see about finding
dodger_sister so I'll answer these when I get back. Life is looking up as some money things were sorted and I keep hearing about wonderful things that will be happening in California as my family is awesome.
Also at some point I need to write something longer about this article on Boys and Reading in the NYTimes, because forced gendering isn't the right answer. Good books and presenting as many avenues as possible to reading is what helps-ebooks, audio books, graphic novels and not making it about boys and girls reading. Instead making it about good books and safe spaces for kids to get interested in reading.
1. Give me a canon (or character from a canon)
2.And I will you FIVE things that, in my opinion, make that canon super special shiny and awesome. They may be characters, crowning moments of awesome/funny/heartwarming, particularly epic music or animation, or just things that make me out and out squee every time.
(Or, because it sounds a little hilarious, I can even attempt to take it meta for you. Give me a character and a canon, and I will tell you from that character's pov what their five favorite things about a specific canon [theirs or any other] would be.)

Date: 2011-08-21 12:05 am (UTC)2-The relationships which are complex and feel real.
3-The music of the movie, the soundtrack is one of my favorites to listen to.
4-The pretty, its a gorgeous movie even though its a rather dirty one.
5-The acting, there isn't a single weak actor in the movie, everyone is worth watching and makes it feel real and wonderful.

Date: 2011-08-21 12:09 am (UTC)2-How anything is possible on the Disc, it makes it a fun place to play.
3-How even though the world is quite bizarre, all the characters on the Disc feel like people you could meet.
4-The clever references to everything, as a lifelong reader I adore having a moment of going, ooh, I know what's being referenced.
5-In terms of Moist himself, I love his enjoyment of life. Even when he's scared he's going to die, you can tell that he wouldn't want to be anywhere else like on the ride on the stallion.

Date: 2011-08-21 12:12 am (UTC)2-The visuals, its a beautiful show that creates a great world.
3-All of the characters but I think Firo was the one who hooked me because he enjoys himself so much. And he's a much brighter character than I expected in that dark world.
4-The twists, I had no idea what to expect and was constantly amazed and gratified. I love a layered world.
5-The ideas about life and death and what's worth living for and how being immortal changes you and doesn't change you.
Now I need to go and watch it again and get myself some icons.

Date: 2011-08-21 12:14 am (UTC)2-The overarching ideas about what counts in life and what's worth fighting for.
3-The imagery especially of the signs is one of my favorite parts of the entire series.
4-The use of music within the books, which is skillfully done.
5-The clear love of home and that feel of place that's in all of the Dark is Rising books.

1-I like the conceit of it with the Artifacts, its oddly plausible.
2-The way its clear the characters all care for each other in different ways. I thought the Christmas episode was remarkably sweet.
3-The smart references to history and literature.
4-The visuals with a small budget they do a lot.
5-The humor, I always end up smiling when I catch an episode.
Percy Jackson
1-The story, I did Classics for undergrad so it makes me incredibly happy to see them brought into the modern world and done well. I don't like all the choices but I love the world.
2-How wonderfully real the kids feel, they truly act like teenagers which is so hard to write.
3-The quality of the writing, whenever I read a Riordan book I have a hard time putting it down.
4-How the story doesn't hold back, bad things happen to good people.
5-The importance of family. Its so common in books for kids to have missing parents but considering how messed up they could be, a lot of the families in the Percy Jackson world are strong. I love Percy's mom.

Date: 2011-08-27 10:23 pm (UTC)2-The beautiful language from people like Homer and Pindar and all the playwrights.
3-The honest way of dealing with sex and how sensual things are. These aren't myths that go don't do this, instead its more think about what you do.
4-The tradition that has made these stories ones that are told and retold for centuries.
5-The humor that gets into some of them as the gods are foolish as they're also terrifying.
