I just watched Iris and god it hurt. I watched my grandmother be taken away by Alzheimers and can remember the night she died so clearly. She slipped away and I need to find the poem I wrote about it. It might be crap but this called up so much, seeing her slip away from us, still there but with clouds obscuring her.
My parents are rather older than the norm for my age group so really I truly only grew up knowing my grandmother but we knew each so well. My portrayal of Demeter comes so much from her and her garden and love of growing things.
I miss her everyday and in New Zealand which smelled like California it was even more. If you know anyone going through Alzheimer's, watch this movie, it hurts so much but its true and its important.
