Life has been busy, I turned twenty-five on Thursday and had two packages from home, one from my brother Robert and family and one from my parents. The day was lovely, and quite relaxing, the most exciting thing I did all day was have a back massage at a Aveda day spa that left me feeling so wonderfully mellow and I had dinner on the waterfront. Not a lot's been happening this week, I've been doing reading and research from my paper that I'm going to write today and connecting more with the gaming club.

But last night or this morning depending on you look at it, I saw the opening ceremony and the first game of the world cup with Sunny, my German friend. According to what the sports cafe had been saying the opening ceremony was at 1:30 in the morning and the game started at 3:30. This wasn't entirely accurate since Sunny and I were worried about how crowded the place would be, we showed up at 12:30 and quite a dead sports pub. Things got moving more as time went on and by 3 am the place was very active and full. Sadly the New Zealand hosts they had were rather awful and just seemed silly, but the commentator was English, so he knew what he was talking about and just mangled pronunciation. The opening ceremony also had many cringe factors since it was all about Bavaria and some disturbing bell things.

The game itself was exciting and enjoyable, the final score was Germany 4 Costa Rica 2, and so I feel fairly proud of the Americas since we showed ourselves well in this first match. Everything ended at 6 and Sunny and Sam, a kiwi guy we met at the pub and Sunny already knew decided they wanted to drink more. I decided that sleep is important especially when I have to write a paper, so I hoofed it all the way across down and only had one drunk shout at me. I arrived back at 6:30 and slept till 12:45. Also I picked up the book I needed from my history professor since he took out the only copy and now I'm back and will read and write.

One bit of nice news, yesterday I had a nice chat with Fraser, one of the guys from the gaming club, who I've had brief conversations with before and got the sense we had some things in common just never had a chance for a one on one conversation. So we had one yesterday and it felt nice and I feel like I'm on my way to making another friend. Oh and when I got back today, I found a gift voucher from a wonderful bookstore in Wellington from [livejournal.com profile] pastrydeity, which I'm quite impressed and confused by since as far as I know, they're in Pennsylvania. Still another chance to buy books, which I also did yesterday at a booksale at Dymocks while I picked up a Sydney guidebook. Now to do more research on Ephialtes and the Oresteia and write about 3000 words, email them home for parents to edit and hand it in.
