First Paper
Jun. 6th, 2006 12:51 pmWell, I got my first paper back that I wrote at the beginning of last week and I got a B- on it, not too bad overall, apparently I need more secondary sources. But then that's something I've been learning here, I don't know why but I've never liked secondary sources, I always just want to plunge straight into the work itself and apparently I could have talked more about how Aristophanes poked fun at Euripides though talking about comedy is tough, oh well. In other news, this Friday I gave a work in progress seminar on my research essay and I got a good response, but my supervisor came to me afterwards to say that what I presented and what we've written have diverged slightly. I just want to write about storytelling in Greek Poetry and thus the confusion begins, its either too big or too little. Though oddly I'm not too worried, I didn't mess up my first paper and I think I did okay on the slide test I had last week.
Also, on Friday, I had an enjoyable time at the gaming club and felt like I fit in a bit more, there is definitely a culture thing going on, but I haven't figured out whether its a New Zealand thing or a majority of guys and science geeks thing. And in the the interests of getting along better, I went to a housewarming party for some people in the gaming club on Saturday night after having lunch with Sunny and walking up Mount Victoria, not as big as it sounds but pretty, its where they filmed the road scene in the first LoTR movie. Back to the point, this party was in a suburb called Lower Hutt or the Hutt valley, basically North Jersey with no malls, well I got off at the train stop I was told to with Stefan, a nice guy from the gaming club carrying some beer and pretzels and we preceded to get lost for three hours. We finally found the place after asking directions and going the wrong way, but hey great excerise ;-). The party was fun, slightly odd since some of these people know each other really well and others not so much. Oh and in a quite weird thing, one of the slightly older guys, reminds me far too much of Cliff, so I'll have points of being with this group and clear memories of larps in high school and university.
Then I slept in Sunday and Monday, enjoyed the Queen's Birthday yesterday and heard part of the Royal New Zealand Air Force band play at one of the museums and just had a nice day. The weather feels very much like fall now, the days are clear and crisp sometimes a little windy and its freezing in the shade and lovely in the sun. And I'm just about ready to buy my tickets for a little over a week in Sydney and get to work researching my last paper of the semester. Life is good and I feel much more sure of myself now that I've gotten one paper back and I've seen where I need to improve. And Thursday I turn 26 and get to open presents from home and after this week, two more weeks of class on Tuesdays and then Australia. So if you know anyone who's been to Sydney or some good sites, please pass them on to me.
