Another round of this meme because I just really enjoy it. This time the associations are from [livejournal.com profile] kali921 and just tag below if you would like some associations for yourself or if you want to give me some that I haven't done before.

Association Meme

Comment to this post and I will give you five subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this to your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

1. New Zealand!

I went to New Zealand to figure myself out and in the end I kind of did. It was the first place I supported myself on my own and also the place where I had one of my hardest years. My thesis defeated me because it wasn't the right time but New Zealand is one of my favorite places in the world due to the warmth of the welcome I received there and how I was able to figure a lot of things about myself out. I learned what kinds of jobs I enjoy and that I can go someplace utterly foreign and land on my feet.

2. Robin Hood and his Merry Men.

Robin Hood was something I discovered when I was younger through Paul Creswick's version and the accompanying illustration. I think I was in maybe fourth or fifth grade and since then Will Scarlett in some form or another has been in my head. I've told his story and I've written it in various forms and so he was the first character I brought into Milliways and is still someone I can play with such ease. I think what I love most about the stories is how they're reinterpreted yet some things always hold true, the magic of Sherwood, the incredible loyalty of all the men to each other and their home and the beauty and complicated story of Robin and Marian. Though honestly it was the wonderful argumentative friendship of Will and Little John that really caught me since I adore those kind of challenging friendships where both friends truly add to the other.

3. Being one of the most friendly and welcoming people that I've ever met online.

I'm so glad to be seen that way. I think this comes about as a result of a lot of very different factors. I'm from a blended family where I'm the glue so I've always been a mediator even when I was little. Then add in that I can be quite shy at times and I always want to make sure that someone new feels welcomed and part of whatever's going on. I think that you get back what you put out and so I try to be as friendly as I'd wish others to be.

4. Greek mythology.

Growing up I had a beautifully illustrated book full of the Greek myths which I loved since it just got me thinking. Then when I was taking Latin 101 in my last year of high school, I had this fresh behind the ears teacher from Swarthmore college who read us the first stanza of The Odyssey in the original Greek, then Latin and then translations through the years. I was hooked because I've always adored storytelling and looking at narrative which was why I studied Pindar for my master's. I might not have finished the thesis but I still have my translations and have no regrets for the research I did. The Greeks were willing to turn and twist the myths around to achieves what they wanted in different forms from plays to poems. Having the chance to actually play out and discuss with out intelligent people why does this happen in the myths has just made me love them more and see them for the wonderfully complex stories they are.

5. PIRATES.

I think I've always loved pirates, because honestly how can you not. I love old movies and so I think two of my favorites pirates are Burt Lancaster and Errol Flynn, they know how to swashbuckle. Pirates of Penzance sneaked up on me, because I think I saw the Pirate Movie on tv and thought ooh this is cool. There was a video store that always had cheap videos on sale when I was growing up and I bought Pirates of Penzance because I thought it was the Pirate Movie. Then I fell in love with Kevin Kline, the great part was as part of my English minor, I studied the actual play. I was so amazed that some of the stuff that I thought must have been made up for the movie were actually in the play. Otherwise, I just really, really pirates because they're fun and have such a great range for crazy.

Well I wrote quite a bit more than I realized, as always, this meme is still open because I find it fascinating.
