The timing of the books is different, but there's also that whole thing where more people than not seem to have completely forgotten about the Band With Rocks In. I'd imagine a lot of people either don't know there might be a huge pile of gold at the bottom of the ravine or don't think it's worth the risk. (This being the Disc, more of the former.) I'll keep you posted!
