ceitfianna: (Books don't forget to fly)
My first answer for the December Meme which is very open. As my words have been stuck lately, I think this will be helpful.

For today, [personal profile] rosabelle asked me for favorite YA books, I appreciate that she didn't give me a number so I'm going to start writing and see how many I get to.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman: This is a book about a girl who is also a dragon living in a fantasy world that is European, a walled city, but the dragons. All the characters are complicated, the world building is fantastic and its one I've loaned out and it keeps being loved. The use of music and what does it mean to be one thing but you can make yourself look like another mean and what happens for someone who's in between. The link leads to the review I wrote of it.

The Montmaray Diaries by Michelle Cooper: I recently read all of these books in a gulp and they satisfied a place in my heart from books I read when I was younger. They're set in the 1930s and are an alternate history where this country of Montmaray interacts with world politics and they're about this strange and wonderful family. I read them because [personal profile] skygiants kept mentioning them and then the library had them and I couldn't put them down. They're all written as diary entries by Sophie FitzOsborne and work, they hit my jam spot of siblings, history, Europe and people not always knowing how to deal with the world plus some romance.

Howl's Moving Castle, Deep Secret, Year of the Griffin by Diana Wynne Jones: I love a lot of her books but these are the ones I keep finding myself rereading. One reason I love Diana Wynne Jones is that she knows how to write about not knowing who you are and people telling you who you should be and finding your way to yourself. Also her view of fantasy fits mine which is where the magic is there but not really the point and sometimes gets in the way and makes everything worse.

The Heir Series and Seven Realms by Cinda Williams Chima: The Heir series is a take on wizard and Seven Realms is high fantasy. I first discovered this series when Danii put the first Heir book into my hands and then I got an ARC of the first Seven Realms' during my grad school stuff. These are heavy and beautiful books where the teenagers feel real, they can be brutal and powerful. I can't recommend them enough for how it feels like she gets kids.

And suddenly I'm drawing a blank so I think I'll stop here for now. I love a lot of books but my collection is in boxes in storage, but this gives a sense of what I love.
