ceitfianna: (lost in a library)
I had my last two classes today, my reference class and my children's literature class, the first one was pretty much the norm for the semester, a lecture that felt too long and then a kind of interesting presentation. My grade for that class is going to be okay since I did the work but I didn't find the work interesting and that tends to decide just how much effort I put into it. As one of my parents' friends said, its one of those classes where you pay your professional dues.

Children's literature on the other hand was fun, we did two reflection exercises, one in a group and one on our own. I want to post up here my beliefs as a youth librarian at this point in my step towards being a librarian. I have a feeling that I'll write other things like this so I can look back and see what's changed and what's stayed the same.

My Beliefs as a Youth Librarian

The library should be a haven for children.
I will be the children's advocate and try to provide books and resources
that they find interesting.
I will respect and listen to my community so I can serve them to the best
of my ability.
If I disagree with a community or parent's choice then I will search for a
compromise and try to balance my own person beliefs with the children's
needs.
I believe in finding books that educate and challenge children without
boring them.
I believe in the power of teaching children to find their own voices
through various creative endeavors.
I believe that there is a format and reading style to suit every child and
it is my responsibility to help them find it.
I believe that I am still learning and need to ask my patrons what books
will help them see themselves in the library.
I believe that I am part of a community and I can do more for the children
of my library when I work and outreach to my community.
I believe that I am connected to a fantastic network of librarians and
teachers who can help me serve my community best.
