Question for the Flist

moofoot's computer problems have made me realize that I really need to back up my laptop that I use like a desktop.

My mother just invested in a separate hard drive for her macs and said she's willing to help me get one.

So my question, oh computer savvy flist, is what are good brands and how much should I expect to pay for one? Thanks in advance for your help.

ETA I just bought a Western Digital 640GB MY BOOK from Staples, thanks for all your advice.
