[livejournal.com profile] wanderlustlover asked me to write about 'Tell me about thoughts on political hot bed issues: abortion, gay marriage, etc.' so I will do my best. Also I'm open for more requests from anyone.

First off as a bit of background, I basically grew up on the Swarthmore College campus in Southeastern Pennsylvania which is very liberal and visiting Northern California where my mother grew up. I was raised as a Quaker with a open mind set and I see myself as a mediator which is one reason I tend to not talk about hot button issues.

I have strong opinions but it takes a lot to get me angry enough to actually get into an argument with someone. In high school, I dated a guy who was a Republican and we'd argue because he wanted to and I could never win since he would have numbers and facts all lined up while I would just go but no that's wrong.

Abortion

I firmly believe that a woman is the one who should decide what she wishes to do with her body and child and this is one of those issues where I sometimes bite my tongue a lot when I read the news. There are lots of issues involved from health, physical and mental depending on the child's conception, but the most important is the one that will help the woman come out in the best way for her.

I remember possibly last year, an article in the New York Times Magazine about a group who was treating women who have gotten an abortion as victims of a crime and having them mourn their babies. They were a fairly Christian group and it made me want to throw things, because I hated how these women were putting their own opinions and getting them mixed up with other women's feelings and lives.

I went to school in Virginia and have walked through an anti-abortion rally so a friend could get birth control and it made me sick since there was no courstey or respect involved. I don't care if you disagree with me but at least be polite about it and don't make me feel like a horrible person because I don't agree with you or my reasons are more emotional than yours.

Gay Marriage

This one is really easy. I'm all for it, marriage is a ceremony about showing a commitment to someone and I think everyone should get the chance along with all the hardships and benefits involved with it.

The Iraq War

Again I was raised a Quaker which is about being a pacifist and seeing a bit of God in everyone. So for me its hard to find any reason to justify any war, but also both my grandfathers were in the service and I feel there are some things that are worth fighting for.

I think the Iraq war was rushed into and not thought through at all. I have stood at peace vigils and signed petitions and will continue to, but I wish that there was more intelligence about the way things are run. Though sadly I don't think there is going to be any easy ending or situation to this and for now all I can do is lend my support where it will do the most good.

Okay, that's all I can think to say on these issues. Also, I really want Demeter to be approved so I can play her today.
