Other People's Canons
Jan. 20th, 2008 10:13 pmI just finished reading Sam Linnfer's canon and Jamie Hamilton's so I thought I'd write a bit about them. Fair warning for spoilers below though I'll try to keep them small. Also taking a break from my translating.
Homeward Bounders
I'd forgotten just how much I love Dianna Wynne Jones, she has a wonderful sense of people and how they interact with each other. I loved how the one who fixes things isn't the obvious hero figure but someone who just ends up in the position to fix things and realizes it.
My favorite book of hers is A Charmed Life for this exact reason, you go in thinking you know who the person who fixes things will be but it turns out unexpected. Also I love how her characters are flawed and real.
Sam Canon
This is how I think of it in my head mainly due to Bethan and Ashie in chat, so that's what it will be. I loved the first book and could just hear Bethan's Sam as I was reading though I don't think Freya's good enough for him by far. The author can write good interesting characters but she seems to have trouble with plot. Also I saw a couple of characters who would be fascinating to have in Bar though I'm not sure I could do any of them justice, but I loved the Fae and wanted to know more about them along with Annette and Bubble.
Since by the second book the plot kept going between, selling your soul, double cross and saving the world, I found it all a bit tiring. Also somehow in the last few chapters of the second book, she forgot how to write Sam. It got all meta and big and made me go grrr, bring back Sam. I'm glad I read it but I will hold tightly to Bethan's Sam since clearly we can think of more intelligent plot than his author.
And finally a meme from
lienne, I think had it last but its popping up all around my flist. Be warned, I'll do my best but no promises of greatness.
Give me two characters and a prompt, and I'll drabble about them.
