Penguins and Possibilities
Sep. 12th, 2004 04:18 pmMy first week in Dunedin is over and at the moment, I just feel tired. I'm sort of in limbo, but lots of things are starting. Tonight a woman will a flat she's leaving is going to give me a call to let me know her plans and middle of next some job possibilities open up. Though one of the best things I did this weekend was actually go out and be a tourist. It was incredibly relaxing and reminded me that I'm actually in New Zealand and I'm here to enjoy the experience and make of it what I can.
So yesterday morning I woke up and arranged to go on a wildlife tour out to a Royal Albatross Colony and a Yellow-Eyed Penguin reserve that are both on the Otago penisula and about an hour's drive away from Dunedin. They're even technically within the Dunedin city limits, which is just cool. The tour didn't leave till 2, so I spent the morning and afternoon writing postcards and sitting in cafes which was lovely. Then on the tour, there were only two other women, one from Germany and one from Korea. Geoff, I tried to tell her, where you were but I couldn't remember how to pronounce it. Then we saw gorgeous views and from inside manmade trenches, we were close enough to touch the penguins just amazing.
Oh and on Friday, I was lifted up by an incredibly kind stranger. I had woken feeling a little low, so I went and had a nice breakfast and I walk out of the cafe and there's a little market going on. Well, I'm complimented on my necklace of Quan Yin, the goddess of mercy, a present from one of my supervisors made out of jade. And then I just start talking to this woman who was selling crystals and she gave me a hug and an amythesyt bracelet and courage. Then I called my parents and felt better too, and that afternoon I met with the woman with the flat and I might have found a wonderful place, it just depends on her timing. Also she told me about a Farmer's Market on Saturday morning, so I started my day with homemade doughnuts, a homemade chocolate truffle and seeing all the little buisness and farmers and knowing this is where I will buy vegetables and meats and fish on Saturdays. Life is good.
Today, I've just felt really tired, I stayed up late last night watching Gattaca, good but strange movie. Then I slept late and have spent most of the day reading and waiting. Now I think I'm going to go back to my hotel, take a nice hot shower and not doing anything for a while and prepare for tommorow.
