A Good Rainy Weekend

The rain has been going all weekend and delayed my brother's flight arriving last night from Chicago but he arrived and we had a late dinner and a good time. This morning we had brunch and we've been talking about everything from books to jobs to travel and I've missed him so much. I'm lucky that I really love all my siblings and this brother is the one I see least as he lives so far away.

Since he didn't bring a book with him, I gave him To Say Nothing of the Dog to read which makes me happy. I love being able to recommend a book and then say, here, now you can read it. In exchange I was given French cheese and amazing chocolates, which are waiting for me after work.

Oh, I love 'To Say Nothing Of The Dog' and anything I managed to get my hand on by Connie Willis, even the dreary and terribly saddening 'Doomsday Book'.

I really enjoyed it especially all the plays on mysteries of the turn of the century and '20s and '30s as those are some of my favorites. The only shame about lending it to him is that I have to wait to do a reread as I know there will be details to pick up on now that I'm not as focused on what happens next.

Oh and for the meme if you're curious, in terms of characters, I think of you as rather like Sirona.

Yes, you might be right -- among all my charries, she's probably the one most likely, what with the Geek Goth thing (in the canon I take her from), and the fact that I grew up in Wiesbaden that has an important altar stone of hers, which is quite obvious, as it's a spa town of hot springs that were already known to the Romans.

That reminds me -- I need to redye my hair. The purple part has washed out, only the boring chestnut remains.-

Sounds like a good plan. I need to get my hair cut as my bangs have gotten rather long and I tend to trim it when summer starts.

I think the connection for me is that you both are always doing lots of things and full of ideas and connections and trying to make the world better while also laughing at its silliness.

Well, yes, probably I am. I'm lazy for long stretches of time, but if I find something important, I get going about it. And it's possible to change things if you push in the right place -- that's Archimedes' fulcrum or pivot -- if you've got the right one, you can move the world.

Yes, that's why its her as opposed to Teja or Urquhart as they both have a tendency to do, straight lines and this.

She seems more of a non-linear character and pursuing what she wants and if it helps others good, but not the focus.

Yes, I'm nowhere near as focused as either of them, or as Ma'at, come to that. Sirona is more random. Why she really does what she does in canon still eludes me.

I completely get that as I'm the same way. My mother calls it grasshopper brain but I tend to think of it as I'm rather like Tiwa. Oh is that icon of you in NYC?

No, that's not Manhattan, it's 'Mainhattan' -- Frankfurt. The only skyscrapered city in Germany. The pointy highrise in the background is the Messeturm, or Trade Fair Tower, which I use in the icons for the tall office building of the bad guys in my else!game. As that's not far from Wiesbaden, I found it sort of fitting.

Yes, that skyscraper is rather iconic; when you fly over Frankfurt in a holding pattern, you'll notice the red tower with the pyramid on top.

It was a wonderful trade as my brother knows me very well. I just bought some lovely local bread and will enjoy the cheese tonight. Also I've been having leftovers from our dinner out at a great local place.

Yes, Nick and William know the right buttons to push with each other. I'd be incredibly curious to see what happened if they went to each other's worlds. I can't see anyone allowing it but I could see one of them going, bet you can't do such and such. I love how plots just happen with our pups.
