Update and presentations
Things are going pretty well here in Wellington, sorry I haven't updated for a bit, but lifes just been slightly busy. On Friday I gave a presentation for my Athenian history course on Ephialtes' reforms, which went over quite well. I was very happy about this since the week before had been stressful and tiring with Rowan and I annoying each other and icky grey weather. Happily it ended on a good note with my supervisor happy with the work I've done on thinking about my paper, a good presentation and seeing the Wellington Hurricanes beat the Sharks (a South African team) on a rainy, windy night in Wellington. Its odd, the weather was awful but the game was great fun. The Hurricanes won 23 to 17 and Rowan and I were literally in the front row, quite close to the game, this also meant we were close to the wind and rain, but that was part of the fun. I think marching band seriously messed me up, because I associate watching live sports with getting rained on or snowed on or just basically being cold. And Rowan and I were sitting between, some season ticket Hurricanes fans and some young and crazy South Africans, so many oppurtunities for shouting and just enjoying.
The rest of the weekend was also nice, Rowan has shown me a way to walk from Khandallah to Wellington since there's a lovely park called Trelissick that runs through Ngaio gorge and so there's bush, fantails, a creek and such. The walk takes about 2 1/2 hours to three, but its lovely. So Saturday afternoon we walked into town, had an early dinner at a pub since I was ready to fall over and hungry when we arrived and then played arcade games before catching the train back. Sunday was utter, utter laziness for me though Rowan got up and did stuff. My body was just tired and wanted to rest since the week before was emotionally stressful and physically tiring too. Monday was a really lovely day, since we did the walk again, but this time found a slightly more exciting path with at points seemed to be made by goats or such through the bush and clinging onto the side of the ridge. But we did it and didn't slip or fall or anything, just got slightly muddy, then had a nice lunch at this bakery Rowan knows and just spent the rest of the day moving from one comfy spot to read to another. Then we headed back by train and walked to the video store, I still don't know how Rowan got me to do this, but we did and some dvds.
One of these I must recommend to anyone who likes movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, that whole genre, its called Stickmen and it was made in Wellington and its clever, funny and just works. And Wellington's cleaned itself up a bit since it was made too, but a fun movie. Also we saw Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, which is smart and a wee bit odd, but a good watch. And Rowan has discovered a place that has Star Trek Deep Space Nine on video, so we're starting to watch them all the way through and I remembered liking the series, but I like it even more now. That's most of my news, I don't have class on Tuesday next week, but I'm presenting on Etruscan jewellery on Wednesday then I've got two weeks off. Life is good, busy filled with lots of readings and other stuff, but good.
Oh and my parents got back from Guatemala and sent me some lovely things, I love getting mail, its just one of the best things out there. I think that's really all for now, sorry for the delay with updating and congratulations to everyone with fellowships and graduate school. I know I'm loving being a student again. Somehow I'd actually missed the work and apparently some New Zelanders consider what I'm doing a bit much and I am busy, but Randolph-Macon made me work so much that this feels normal. Oh well, life is good and the grey clouds and moving, but its Windy Wellington so the weather will probably change again by the time the day ends.
