Where I grew up we had two libraries - one that was "the big library" though probably still small by any city standard - and then the tiny branch out by the grocery store. I liked the tiny branch better - we knew all the names of everyone there and I could find exactly where my favorite books were. And they were all great people.
I just remember having to read a certain number of books by suchnsuch a date for school. I was in the second grade, but I was reading at a fourth grade reading level, so I was into chapter books. And I was almost finished with this one book, the last one I needed to hit my number - and I remember turning up in time to hand the book in but I wasn't finished and they locked up the library and let me stay 30 minutes late to finish my book. A then signed my form for me. I was 7, I was very proud to be the only person in the class who had their page signed by a legit librarian and not just my mom.
That's my library story - and why I always liked the little library best. Though the bigger library had puppet shows and was where I got my Madeleine L'Engle autograph.
