I recently started a new part-time job that's going well and taking up more of my time than I expected and I'm preparing for a trip. That's why I'm a little late but I do enjoy snowflake challenge and how it stretches me.

Day 2: In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

The October Daye series and all of Seanan McGuire's works. She captures figuring yourself out at many ages and what it feels like to be broken and heal. I discovered her when I was in graduate school and Toby's conflicts and troubles felt familiar and provided a connection for me. Her CD Wicked Girls is one of my most listened to because every song touches me. I've met her twice and the way she's found a way to live the life she wants inspires me. The song My Story is Not Done helped me get through one of my hardest endings.

Day 3: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

This year, I'm going to move to Boston which is becoming more and more possible every day. I want to live in a place with friends and opportunities.

In terms of fandom, I want to finish up to 3 works in progress that are sitting in my drafts.

Day 4: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I will do this as I love connecting to new people through this challenge.

Day 5: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

This fic created a new headcanon for me with Miss Marple who's probably one of my favorite characters ever.

This fic was the perfect coda that I needed after Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, I love seeing this complicated little family come together. This Yuletide was a really good year for Ivan fics and its been inspiring me to write more of him.

Today I baked delicious pecan sandies or shortbread with ground up roasted pecans in it, they turned out beautifully. Tomorrow I'm going to make some more whole wheat bread for my family before getting ready for a trip north. Plans are starting to come along for a move which is stressful but in the end will be good for me.

I love doing the Snowflake Challenge as it pushes me to be creative and remind myself of what I've accomplished.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

To start with, I'm going to post my Yuletide from this year where I wrote about the Luidaeg from the October Daye books interacting with my Great Aunt in the bookstore she owned.

Additional Tags: Conversations, Misses Clause Challenge, Established Relationship
Summary:

Two conversations, one where the Luidaeg has the chance to be the nosy mother figure for Toby and another where a mortal woman sees more than the Luidaeg expected.

I loved your prompt and it ended up being focused more on the Luidaeg as she finds some time to herself after enjoying being the older woman figure in Toby's life. I hope you enjoy it as it was a real treat to write from the Luidaeg's point of view and this fic can be read as any point after Toby and Tybalt are officially a couple.

Summary:

The inspiration for this fic was your wonderful letter with a request for wanting to know more about Frank and Helen, how they set up Narnia and how they interact with all the strange parts of Narnia.

For me the form that took was thinking about their domestic life, beginning in London with what Helen wished she had and then in Narnia near the end of their first year as Narnia is becoming itself around them. As I happen to love Ceres myself, she makes an appearance to help Narnia flourish.

The title comes from In Kerry, by J. M. Synge.

Christmas with the rest of the family ended up being lovely other than a weird bump in terms of my dad forgetting something. Today was great because everyone was on the same page of let's be lazy. I walked into the cute little town near my brother's placed, had lunch with my mom and we went shopping. We've been doing these things but this time there was no and we have to do all this other stuff too. My sister's doing well which is great and I'm looking forward to being there with her for her treatment tomorrow.

My Yuletide has been quiet and also wonderful. My recipient really liked their story and mine is amazing and a fic that I've wanted since I first read Conrad's Fate.

And every now and then when things were a little awful in Twelve—when things in the castle were too strange and he missed Anthea and Stallchester and Mum and even Stallery—he would close his eyes in bed at night and think about the three of them going off on adventures from island to island on a little boat of their own. Just the blue sea and the blue sky and him and Millie able to manage Christopher together well enough that they didn’t go crazy in between the times when they were in between islands, and Christopher to make them laugh and laugh with his cleverness, and everything warm and clear and happy.

When I think of snow, its usually connected with cold and wet. I grew up outside Philly where snow is beautiful but rarely soft. Soft snow makes me think of New Zealand and when it snowed in Dunedin. The snow was wetter and lighter, it kind of snuck up throughout the day in a way that felt differently than the snow I was used to at home. It still ended up cold but felt safe.

The meme is up here and after I finish writing my Yuletide, it will be wonderful to write other things.

Thank you so much for writing for me. Yuletide is one of my favorite times of year. My favorite sorts of stories are missing moments, character studies and that feel as if they fit within the world of the canon. I love all of these fandoms because of the depth of the worlds and the characters, I enjoy action and plot if it fits. When a writer can pull off a complex plot, I love it when it connects with everything else. If you choose to include sex and violence, I ask that if they're there; no rape/dubcon or torture. All of the ones I've asked for are from worlds with difficult aspects to them and I enjoy how the characters interact with and are changed by what's around them.

I'm finally home after two days of celebrations at my brother's house and a small one the night before with my parents. It was all a lot as his in-laws were there and I got into some conversations with them that weren't fun, but my nieces were great and though my back hurts, I'm very happy. Oh though one strange thing happened, on Christmas Eve, the power went out but just on their street, which apparently has worse lighting than other streets. They're on the corner and get the bad power outages. First it went out for only five minutes then for three hours if not more, their stove is gas and my brother was doing some grilling outside, which meant dinner was able to start without power. It changed the feel of the night in a way that was lovely but odd. I'm always surprised just how dark their house can get.

So far I've read my Yuletide fic three times at least and plan on more as it hits a spot for me and my recipient loved what I wrote them. I've only dipped a little into the archive as I didn't have my laptop with me or much time over the last few days, but I've seen a few I plan on reccing. The Check Please fics are full of deliciousness and there are more Toby Daye and Incryptid fics, so many that I want to read.

Also my parents gave me a present that still has me amazed when I think about it, a chance to go to a Broadway show. This year and the last I feel like theater and musicals have come back into my life and I love it. A big part of it is I think this fantastic public radio show called A Night on the Town, which is musical theater history and fantastic clips. Listening to it, the musical fandom on Tumblr and other places has made me want to make sure I keep connecting with theater.

I'm planning to go soon as hotels can be cheaper in January. Does anyone have any recommendations of what's good and possible to get into or any ideas from NYC folks? The last time I saw a show, I was really looking into that show, but now I have choice and its wonderful.

Thank you [personal profile] just_ann_now and [personal profile] camwyn, your cards have arrived and they're lovely. For anyone who'd like one and if you've moved or not sure I have your proper address, please comment on this post, also if you'd like a fic, let me know. All comments are screened and I hope to get them out this weekend.

Today I started the first day of a four day subbing job doing close to what I love and as always it leaves me thoughtful about what works versus ideas. I'm glad I signed up for this almost week long job, RP and writing will be slower but that happens. I'm also revving up for another round of many job applications, because I want to be in a place full of people who get me and that means finding a job that works and wants me.

Yuletide is going, I feel like its a good pace and I'm happy with what I've written so far. An unexpected pleasure is helping with the weeding at my local library in preparation for their move next year. At the moment, I'm going through the juvenile nonfiction section and some of the books are strange. I enjoy having the time to do that and it gives me a chance to talk more with my mentor there.

For now, I'm glad to be sitting as this subbing job requires lots of standing but I have good shoes.

I'm slowly getting things accomplished as I think about all that happened at Chessiecon and where I want to be next. I'm working on getting myself out of where I am now and to a place where I'm living near friends. There are jobs out there, its a matter of getting in the door and being the right fit.

In the meantime, I've written up a new blog post about the films I saw at the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival and I'm going to do an in depth one for Chessiecon.

I also wanted to remind everyone that I love sending out cards and if you'd like one or your address has changed, let me know here. All comments on there are screened and if you don't want a card but instead want a fic or also want a fic, let me know.

My Yuletide and Treat fic are both going along, the ideas are there its just getting the words to work.
ceitfianna: (riding into the sun)
At the moment, I feel sick but there are some hopeful job things happening in the near future. I'm trying to put myself out there in terms of ALA and I'm happy with my Yuletide. I think this year I might write a Treat for the first time.

What I finished reading

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I love Rowell's books and Carry On was fantastic as she really understands what it is about the Chosen One stories and fantasy that draw people in and how to turn it all on its head. This is a book about two boys who take control of their story even though the story isn't encouraging them to and their friends who are along with them. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, but wishes for more.

What I'm currently reading

The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. I always enjoy Riordan's books and this one isn't disappointing, he's got a great ear for dialogue, action and how kids behave. I appreciate that he's gotten much better about putting diversity into his casts and understanding that diversity covers a wide range from being homeless to being Deaf.

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo. At this point, I'm not terribly far into this book and I'm not completely sure how I feel about it. I enjoy the setting and the main character has a good voice but so far, she seems fairly passive. I'm hoping more will happen as so far, there's not much of a conflict or romance, but I like the author's style.

What I'm reading next

One of the books I'm reading next is for Yuletide so I'm not going to list it but I'm looking forward to it. I love writing for other people and how Yuletide always ends up stretching my sense of what I think I can write. I also have the newest Jonathan Stroud Lockwood and Company book to read, which should be fun and creepy. The Rehoboth Film Festival is coming up next week, so far this year I'm not seeing a huge amount of films, I know there will be one or two that really stick with me. Now I think its time for more tea.

The question for today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge fits in well with what I'm doing for dinner. For Christmas, I was given the Smitten Kitchen cookbook and the pizza dough recipe from it is currently rising in the oven to be my dinner.

Day 11

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources.

This is probably a perfect question for me since I'm a librarian and I love resources of all types and as I've been doing fact-checking as a part-time job, I've found even more.

A few that I've used and loved:

Walt Whitman archive, all of his poetry including scans of his manuscripts to see how the words changed.

Poetry Foundation, which has free poetry including poems being read aloud, poet's biographies and interviews.

Library of Congress, so many fantastic resources from images to documents.

Metrolyrics and other sites like it. I tend to find my fic titles from songs and sites like this are great for finding the right one.

Stanford's Dime Novel collection, this was part of the inspiration for my Yuletide this year, its also been a resource for RP.

I could happily list even more since I love finding the right resource to answer a question and then learning unexpected elements. This is why I adore reading nonfiction too, I'm always learning and the internet has great resources and a lot of my friends are researchers too. So we tend to be sharing questions and places that we've found answers.

Actually the last three major fics I wrote have a meta element that comes from my being a librarian and historian. I think a big part of the inspiration was that a large part of my fact-checking involved looking at who are the sources for which parts of history and who's missing.

The Outlaw Wade or A Young Lawyer's Journey, my Yuletide that looked at in world dime novels about Ben Wade from 3:10 to Yuma.

Finest Job, my [community profile] narniaexchange fic where I thought about what elements of King Frank and Queen Helen's rank would survive to the Pevensies.

Got the Details Right, my Marvel Cinematic Universe fic for [community profile] ineedmyfics where Sam Wilson and Natasha Romanoff watch in universe films about Captain America, which was inspired by another fic.
ceitfianna: (Charles+Raven-here to hold you)
Its windy and cold today and the world is being scary once more. Keep warm and safe everyone.

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge is one that I hadn't really thought about before though I know my character type for RP.

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs.

Families and friendship, the kinds that are difficult and that are chosen by the characters. In stories, the ones I love are where you can see people coming together and going, oh, you get it. I also love seeing the domestic contentment that happens when you've found your people and aren't off saving the world. This is one reason that the new Flash television show hooked me so quickly as its all about who do you trust, who do you love and who helps you become a better person. I love it when these relationships are poked at too such as Charles and Raven's relationship throughout the two newest X-Men movies. That being a found family is a complicated and never easy place and when writers go into that, it makes me happy. The bumps and troubles make when it works so much sweeter.

A few of my fandoms that hit this are October Daye, Incryptid, Hexwood, Magid Series, Chrestomanci, Leverage, the Raven Cycle, Robin Hood, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, MCU, X-Men.

This Yuletide was full of a lot of fics that were all about these created families.

Impulse Control about the after of Hexwood.

Eyewitness Account that hits all that I love about The Flash as we see everyone understanding and watching out for each other.

It Takes a Village, a wonderful Vorkosigan fic about planning the wedding and seeing all the people around Ekaterin and Miles.

Ready or Not, a Fangirl fic that's all about finding your own tribe.

A Quiet Night, domestic fluff of October Daye from the point of view of May.

The Eighth Bell, a post-canon Old Kingdom fic where everyone redefines themselves and learns to go forward.

Honestly, I could link my entire reading history on Ao3 to answer this but these are my recent favorites. I'm going to end by linking a wonderful Leverage fanvid that also captures found family so well.
ceitfianna: (Dean time rambles on)
This is going to be a short entry as the way this [community profile] snowflake_challenge is set up, there's not a lot to write here.

Day Four

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

It doesn't have to be anything complex - it can be feedback for a fanwork or discussing something you might have in common or even simply admiring their icon. The point is to reach out to someone you normally wouldn't and connect with them, even if it's only for the briefest moment.

I like the idea of this is and its something that I do a lot during Yuletide, where if I like a fic I leave Kudos and a comment. This is because I find comments one of my favorites parts of writing, no matter how small or long they are as it shows someone cares enough to interact with my work. Some of this also comes from the fact that when I first started putting my fic online, it was only on my journal and pretty much only related to Milliways. So comments are key, because its not possible to really leave Kudos on a journal. Also through Milliways was where my flist first began to grow as I learned more of the wonderful people I was writing with.

For this challenge, I commented on a new person on my flist's Snowflake Challenge, who also wrote for me for Yuletide. Its wonderful to have this challenge around Yuletide when new friends appear and this is a good way to understand their creative process better.
ceitfianna: (Charles/Erik-remake the world)
Yesterday was fun, I spent the morning helping kids make shaking noisemakers out of plastic eggs, spoons and lots of duct tape then the evening cooking black-eyed peas and watching Reign. That show works for me, I think part of it is the music and the acting, also I treat it like history fanfiction. There were some moments when I looked at the outfits and situations and went, really, but its fun and pretty.

Last night, I slept for so long, it was wonderful. I woke up after having a great dream too that I'm going to hold onto. I dreamed that I was with my parents at a museum or some big city and there was this woman that had a stall selling all sorts of things. We got to talking with here and we each found various things then my parents went on ahead. I stood with her a while and we shared a glass of bourbon. Since I've been up, I've been thinking about that dream and how she wasn't in one slot, but she was happy. The way I end up moving forward might not be with one full time job, I might end up with a number of options that I enjoy.

Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Ben Wade, Original Male Character(s)
Additional Tags: dime novel, Post-Canon, Canon-Typical Violence, stagecoach robbery, in world fiction
Summary:

This story was written for DesertScribe who was interested in Ben Wade and gave me many ideas to work with. I ended up wondering about that dime novel of William's and how Ben is perceived through that lens. As Ben rides the train towards Yuma, he reads a dime novel written about himself before he finds an opportunity to escape.

My recipient DesertScribe was easy to write for as they gave me lots and lots of ideas and I only had to pick one. I decided to focus on Ben directly after canon and then I had this thought about dime novels and trying something a little meta. I'm happy with how it turned out and they enjoyed it.

Along with my wonderful Carmilla fic, I also got a great Yuletide Treat called A Promise set post canon of Scorpio Races, a short and potent fic.

I've been reading through reveals and I loved so many of your fics. May this New Year be full of joy for everyone!
ceitfianna: (Tumnus)
My Christmas is off to a wonderful start. Last night we opened presents and I'm already enjoying one of them, a clever tea infuser that is lovely and I'm now enjoying loose leaf tea for the first time in a while. It even fits wonderfully into the tall mug that my brother gave me last weekend.

I have two new books, one I've already started reading and another I plan on playing with a lot. One is My Dear Cassandra, a gorgeous, illustrated book of Jane Austen's letters to her sister and the other is the Smitten Kitchen cookbook. I've wanted this cookbook since I've known it was going to happen but hadn't bought it. I'm going to have such fun cooking with it.

I've just started my headlong dive into Yuletide and have two recs, my gift and a wonderful Old Kingdom fic.

What Could Go Wrong?, a fic about the Carmilla web series and it captures the tone of the series perfectly. Its an adventure in the midst of trying to write a paper and it doesn't require too much knowledge of the series.

Then when looking over my friends list, I found this fantastic Old Kingdom fic that's post-canon and really follows along with my own ideas of what might happen next. And Sam making something with Nick working with him is a huge part of it.

I just signed up for Yuletide and this year only did four requests because I couldn't pick any other two. With all these years of Yuletide and I Need My Fics, a lot of what I've wanted has been written, which is lovely but makes sign ups harder.

Sometimes its just a matter of going, yes, I want this and at the moment my main want is a job. But there are things out there and in the meantime, I did some writing at the horror fic that I posted about a few days ago. I recommend looking there if you're in the mood to write something creepy and are missing Sharp Teeth.

All of the ones I've asked for are from worlds with difficult aspects to them and I enjoy how the characters interact with and are changed by what's around them.

October Daye Series-Quentin, Raj, Toby, Tybalt-For this one, I could happily ask for almost any combination of characters but I'm fascinated by the younger generation and the domestic life of Toby's found family. I also ship Quentin and Raj, but that's a truly optional detail. Moments of growing friendship and interaction between not just Quentin and Raj but Chelsea, Arden, Dean, all these young Fae who are learning how to shape the world and being greatly influenced by Toby.

The Scorpio Races-Sean Kendrick, Puck Connelly-I read this book a few months ago and it really stuck with me, the small community and how all the characters are trying to find their place within it and out of it. I would love any sort of missing moment, parts of the book from other eyes, more of this world.

Carmilla-Web Series-Lauren Hollis, Danny Lawrence, Carmilla Kernstein-I adore this series because it reminds me so much of my time at an all woman's college. The friendships, being in close proximity but with added supernatural elements. I would love to just see more of this world.

The Vorkosigan Saga-Miles Vorkosigan, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Alys Vorpatril, Simon Illyan-One of my favorite parts of these books is the sense of a world and the complicated found family that Miles is born with and grows up around him. I've always loved his friendship with Ivan and how the two of them reflect the adults around them. I'd love to read about more of Miles' childhood and then how that is changing how he acts as a father. If you could include Ivan and their friendship, I'd love it but that's purely optional.

Thank you once again for writing for me.

New Year

I don't think I'm going to do the year end meme this year as the majority of my year was spent reacting to what happened in the early part of last year. Instead I'm going to focus on what's ahead and on creating some new roads for myself.

Yesterday I was part of one of the best New Year's Eve celebrations that I've ever been a part of. I helped the children's librarian set up something called Noon Year's Eve, a party for the kids with crafts, food and a balloon drop. We opened the doors at 11 am and I left at around 1 pm and it was fantastic. This is the first time that the library has done this kind of party though they happen at other museums so we didn't know how many people would we get. At the max, we had about fifty kids plus attached family members, it was wonderful and chaotic. People swirled in and out, and entire families stopped by. I did a lot of corralling of kids and families, smiled so much that my mouth hurt and was reminded of how I love being a children's librarian. One of the people there even asked me if I'd organized it all, which was a huge compliment. Then I came home and didn't do a lot until some family friends arrived at 7:30 for some drinks and my parents and I had a quiet night in.

Today I slept in late and I've been slowly spending the various gift cards I got and I'm pushing through The Book Thief. I don't like it at all, it feels very contrived and like the author was going hm, what sort of book will get me the most accolades without requiring much work to write? I'm reading it because the children's librarian had a copy and lent it to me, also at some point its going to be a book for my parent's book club. Normally I would have given up on it, but it was lent to me and I want to write a really scathing review and I'll feel more comfortable doing that if I finish it. I feel like some of you on my flist have read it, but can't recall who. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

In terms of plans for the next few days, I'm going to be writing up the app for [personal profile] vorpatril, finally sending off some holiday stuff and getting back into the world of job finding.

For Yuletide, I had a great year and received two wonderful stories and wrote one in a new fandom for me. NightsMistress wrote me by blood and breath, the post canon Sameth story that I always wanted with the complicated and painful dynamics of the family and Sameth's view on the world. Astolat wrote me Twice Removed, a brilliant Nero Wolfe story that feels like Rex Stout could have written it.

Fandom: Eight Days of Luke - Diana Wynne Jones

Additional Tags: Families of Choice, Past Relationship(s), Divorce, past imprisonment, Adulthood, References to Norse Religion & Lore
Summary:

The request for this fic was for Astrid after canon with some Loki tossed in and I went with that. I got to wondering about how would she find her way and if perhaps some of those other Norse gods might come and help. This fic ended up being Astrid, Sif and Sigyn have conversations about being your own woman while David, Thor and Loki are off doing other things. I hope you enjoy it as I found it a pleasure to write.

Small warning for references to an unhappy marriage and a home life of neglect.

It truly was armor somehow, captured in the knitting to reflect her true self like how if you looked just right, Thor’s hammer was always on his belt. Astrid had read of her, a warrior who had to prove her worth but respected by all the gods and warriors. And now she was standing in this small kitchen, with the stove that spat fire if it wasn’t lit correctly, having tea.

GloriaMundi wanted a fic about Astrid, who I enjoyed when reading Eight Days of Luke, so I had a beginning right away. Then I got stuck until I started thinking about Norse goddesses and that helped the story to come together for me. Ashie was my wonderful beta. I love being part of Yuletide and I've read a lot of fantastic stories.
