I recently started a new part-time job that's going well and taking up more of my time than I expected and I'm preparing for a trip. That's why I'm a little late but I do enjoy snowflake challenge and how it stretches me.

Day 2: In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

The October Daye series and all of Seanan McGuire's works. She captures figuring yourself out at many ages and what it feels like to be broken and heal. I discovered her when I was in graduate school and Toby's conflicts and troubles felt familiar and provided a connection for me. Her CD Wicked Girls is one of my most listened to because every song touches me. I've met her twice and the way she's found a way to live the life she wants inspires me. The song My Story is Not Done helped me get through one of my hardest endings.

Day 3: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

This year, I'm going to move to Boston which is becoming more and more possible every day. I want to live in a place with friends and opportunities.

In terms of fandom, I want to finish up to 3 works in progress that are sitting in my drafts.

Day 4: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I will do this as I love connecting to new people through this challenge.

Day 5: In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

This fic created a new headcanon for me with Miss Marple who's probably one of my favorite characters ever.

This fic was the perfect coda that I needed after Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, I love seeing this complicated little family come together. This Yuletide was a really good year for Ivan fics and its been inspiring me to write more of him.

Today I baked delicious pecan sandies or shortbread with ground up roasted pecans in it, they turned out beautifully. Tomorrow I'm going to make some more whole wheat bread for my family before getting ready for a trip north. Plans are starting to come along for a move which is stressful but in the end will be good for me.

I love doing the Snowflake Challenge as it pushes me to be creative and remind myself of what I've accomplished.

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

To start with, I'm going to post my Yuletide from this year where I wrote about the Luidaeg from the October Daye books interacting with my Great Aunt in the bookstore she owned.

Two conversations, one where the Luidaeg has the chance to be the nosy mother figure for Toby and another where a mortal woman sees more than the Luidaeg expected.

I loved your prompt and it ended up being focused more on the Luidaeg as she finds some time to herself after enjoying being the older woman figure in Toby's life. I hope you enjoy it as it was a real treat to write from the Luidaeg's point of view and this fic can be read as any point after Toby and Tybalt are officially a couple.

Thank you so much for writing for me. Yuletide is one of my favorite times of year. My favorite sorts of stories are missing moments, character studies and that feel as if they fit within the world of the canon. I love all of these fandoms because of the depth of the worlds and the characters, I enjoy action and plot if it fits. When a writer can pull off a complex plot, I love it when it connects with everything else. If you choose to include sex and violence, I ask that if they're there; no rape/dubcon or torture. All of the ones I've asked for are from worlds with difficult aspects to them and I enjoy how the characters interact with and are changed by what's around them.

Last night, I finished watching Cleverman on Netflix and wow, I can't recommend it enough. Its a near future dystopia set in Australia which involves major racial issues and pulls you straight into the world without a huge amount of explanation. Everything that's going on in the world now; racism, police brutality, surveillance, issues of land, sexism, all there. Major warnings as its not easy to watch but it pulls off what Mad Max does in terms of the sex crimes, nothing overt is shown but you know. In terms of other media, the closest to it for me is something between Heroes, the Craft sequence and The Book of Phoenix. The creator actually talked about why he created it here.

The other great piece of media I finished was Once Broken Faith, the newest October Daye. Normally I inhale these books but due to substituting on Friday and being busy with other things, I read this book slower, which worked. I feel like as this series continues on, the world grows wider and the plots aren't as much of a head long rush. Instead every choice ripples outward and matters. This one plus Full of Briars has me considering doing a reread in the midst of my huge to-read pile.

I've also started the newest Riordan, The Hidden Oracle, which is going to be a fun ride and so far has me thinking about The Just City. Apollo is one of those gods who

In terms of not great stuff, my substituting day was tough, a little boy cried in my arms because of a lottery thing the teacher was doing. I understand the choices these teachers make but the rewards are complicated. I might write more about that later, I don't know, its just stayed with me.
ceitfianna: (Tumnus)
Last night I stayed up far too late rereading a few of my favorite fanfics. I love being a part of the fanfic community and I'm constantly amazed by what people write and create and that other people appreciate my writing. I'm going to highlight a few of my favorite fics, ones that I keep coming back to.

Psmith Giantslayer, which is a fic that combines Narnia and P.G. Wodehouse's Mike and Psmith books. Thanks to this fic, I discovered the Psmith books which this author nails in terms of tone and I always adore Narnia stories that look at what happens after and how Narnia echoed later in the Pevensies' life.

Care and Feeding, an October Daye fic that I adore because it shows Quentin and Raj being dorks and friends together.

An Ace Up the Sleeve, a Wylan/Jesper fic that is hot and the writer captures the tangled mess of relationships that makes Six of Crows so good.

Going Dark, a Slings and Arrows fic that perfectly gets the mess of theater life and feels like a couple of episodes of the show.

Tomorrow (there'll be more of us) which is a Force Awakens fic about the impact that Finn has on stormtroopers. The amount of world building in this fic is mind blowing.

Fake it 'til you make it, one of my favorite Check Please fics starring Lardo, Shitty and the fake relationship trope done to a tee.

Like Butter on Toast, a Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries fic where Dot figures out and goes after what she wants.

College and Family, a thoughtful and beautiful Lilo and Stitch fic about Lilo and Nani as sisters.

Did Not Do the Research, a Princess Tutu fic that shows why fact checkers, a job I do, are so important.
ceitfianna: (Charles/Erik-remake the world)
I can't believe that Alan Rickman's dead. I've been traveling all day so only learned about it when I was on the train to NYC. He's an actor who's been in so many movies I adore and ones I don't, but he was always worth watching. Also I found out that the actor who voiced Robin Hood in Disney is dead as well from [personal profile] sdelmonte and that's awful, his voice was always my Robin Hood.

For the Snowflake Challenge, the prompt for the 14th actually ties into some fics that I want to rec.

Day 14

In your own space, share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

I think my favorite trope, the kind that will pull me deeper into a fandom is if the characters feel messy and real. I have a weakness for characters figuring out what they can do and who they are and all the bumps along the way. I think the best example of this for me is Sameth from The Abhorsen Chronciles, his perception of himself feels real and while the situation is extraordinary, his reactions feel real. If you look at my roleplaying roster on my profile or the types of fics I tend to write, they tend to be all about someone making sense and making mistakes and finding what they can do.

Day 13
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

And there was a feeling as though that status had to be maintained, as though the first person to break it by speaking a cross word or even voicing a minor annoyance might be breaking something precious.

I adore Diana Wynne Jones' books because of how she writes messy people and situations. This fic with Christopher and Millie getting married and having their first fight feels like a continuation of the books. Its sweet, sad and funny,

Or, How Dot Decides It's Time to Bring Hugh Home.

Its really hard to pick only three fics but I think this one needs more love. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is a show where I worry for all of them and this fic is Hugh and Dot trying to sort themselves out. I love how you can see the various found families and orbits of Dot, Hugh and everyone else. That intertwining and care that helps them find their way to happiness.

I hope other people enjoy these fics as they make me happy.

Today I did one of my goals for yesterday and posted on my librarian blog; What I don't have to explain: Yuletide and Chessiecon. This post has been in my thoughts for a long time but it happened to coincide well with the youth media awards and I feel like I put across my thoughts in a way I like.

The State of the Union was powerful, I felt like he's done a lot and now I'm watching Hamilton videos on youtube and on Thursday I'll see Fiddler on the Roof. Words have such power and speaking them to audiences changes the chemistry in ways that I love.

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

In your own space, tell us what it is that gets you to cross that line into fandom.

For me, this is all about character, if I believe that there are people who feel true and a world that does the same then I'm hooked. Just this year, I fell into Sense8, first season of Friday Night Lights, and was reminded how much I adore musical theater fandoms like Les Mis and Guys and Dolls with Hamilton, always Hamilton. There are others but these ones come to mind first. Honestly, I haven't watched the second season of Friday Night Lights because I don't know if I'm ready for what's going to happen to the characters. Its the double edged sword part of how I love fandoms, I care so much that I sometimes hold back for fear of what happens to them.

Though the times when the creators just land it like Seanan McGuire with the newest October Daye books where it breaks my heart but I love it, I want all the fic and meta. Star Wars too, I started falling back in love with Star Wars thanks to first the X-Wing novels and then the Clone Wars series which I'm now rewatching and its the depth of it all. If there's a larger world and characters I can wonder about then I'll go into fic.

This has been a good year in fandom for me, I keep remembering a new fandom that clicked for me like Check Plase! or Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries then Yuletide goes, look, you're not alone. This is one of my more rambling answers but for me, it all comes down, do I care, do I want to know more?

Day 7

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is a hard one to pick but yesterday I read the newest October Daye story by Seanan McGuire and was reminded how much I adore her writing.

For reference, this story and others that aren't in anthologies are posted here. I recommend investigating her site as she writes lyrics, books, short stories and so many fantastic works that inspire me. The latest story Heaps of Pearl overall wouldn't make sense without lots of backstory but I've found a quote that doesn't need it. I love how McGuire writes dialogue and people that feel real.

"This is the King's kitchen, missy," said a passing serving girl, sounding faintly offended. "We never run out of cheese."

"You heard the lady," said Dianda, turning back to me. "I'll expect your entire life story now, if you would be so kind. Don't make me ask again. There's still the chance that I'll grow weary of your company and hit you with a chair."

"You are very hard on the furniture," I said. It was difficult to keep the amusement out of my voice. It would have been utterly impossible, had I not been so thoroughly baffled. Dianda was, by any objective measure, beautiful. Her motions were quick and precise, underpinned by the sort of purpose that I rarely saw among the idle nobility. Her features were pleasant, and while she was lovely when she smiled, I thought she was twice as fine when she scowled. The fact that she allowed herself to frown was enough to set her apart from most of the nobles I knew. They kept their faces pleasantly neutral, lest they betray an actual emotion to someone who could use it against them. The embroidery on her gown was elegantly done, ornamented with bits of pearl and sea glass. She was lovely, intelligent, interesting...and sitting with me. Clearly, there was something terribly wrong with her. That, or she simply hadn't been warned about the local social structure yet, and this was an opportunity I was never going to have again.
ceitfianna: (Charles+Raven-here to hold you)
I'm finally home after two days of celebrations at my brother's house and a small one the night before with my parents. It was all a lot as his in-laws were there and I got into some conversations with them that weren't fun, but my nieces were great and though my back hurts, I'm very happy. Oh though one strange thing happened, on Christmas Eve, the power went out but just on their street, which apparently has worse lighting than other streets. They're on the corner and get the bad power outages. First it went out for only five minutes then for three hours if not more, their stove is gas and my brother was doing some grilling outside, which meant dinner was able to start without power. It changed the feel of the night in a way that was lovely but odd. I'm always surprised just how dark their house can get.

So far I've read my Yuletide fic three times at least and plan on more as it hits a spot for me and my recipient loved what I wrote them. I've only dipped a little into the archive as I didn't have my laptop with me or much time over the last few days, but I've seen a few I plan on reccing. The Check Please fics are full of deliciousness and there are more Toby Daye and Incryptid fics, so many that I want to read.

Also my parents gave me a present that still has me amazed when I think about it, a chance to go to a Broadway show. This year and the last I feel like theater and musicals have come back into my life and I love it. A big part of it is I think this fantastic public radio show called A Night on the Town, which is musical theater history and fantastic clips. Listening to it, the musical fandom on Tumblr and other places has made me want to make sure I keep connecting with theater.

I'm planning to go soon as hotels can be cheaper in January. Does anyone have any recommendations of what's good and possible to get into or any ideas from NYC folks? The last time I saw a show, I was really looking into that show, but now I have choice and its wonderful.

Fandoms and details )

Thank you so much for writing for me.
ceitfianna: (a writer's life)
I'm dealing with some major head congestion but I'm slowly putting various things in motion. A big part of that has been more writing, I finished my [community profile] ineedmyfics in a fandom I've never written for and started a few more fics including at least one in another new fandom. Not new to me, but new to my writing.

What I finished

Beautiful Secret by Christina Lauren, which I enjoyed. I liked that the hero was the one who needed to be taught how to enjoy himself and the conflicts and issues made sense. My main issue was it felt like the heroine didn't have as strong an emotional journey, hers was more dealing with making something that had been a fantasy, a reality and what it meant. A good and sexy read with some wonderfully intimate and funny scenes, an author who's contemporaries I might read more of.

A Red-Rose Chain by Seanan McGuire, the newest October Daye book. This is one that feels like its setting the stage but at the same time opening up the world. As always I love these books and this is one I look forward to rereading because its more about seeing what's going on and working to fix it instead of solving something. It also feels like a book with Toby embracing her role in a way she hasn't before and its great to see and I love all the background it provided. Its left me with questions, ideas and a lot to chew on.

What I'm currently reading

No Dark Place by Joan Wolf, a medieval set book that I'm not sure how to categorize. At times, it reminds me of the Cadfael books in terms of the research and there is a mystery, but the author didn't learn from Peters the lesson of showing the world versus telling. I've been moving slowly through this book because too many things get spelled out, taking their armor off every time they enter, commenting on the armor and who's overlord. Once or twice would be fine for setting the scene but there's too much explaining and it gets in the way. The characters and story are intriguing, the main character is a young man trying to find out where he fits on the cusp of the war between Stephen and Matilda and everyone wants to use him. Instead he's trying to understand where he came from, find a way to be with the woman he loves and deal with migraines. At this point, I have about a hundred pages left in the book, but I don't know when I'll read them. There isn't a huge pull for me in this book and I wish there was. Good historical fiction makes me happy and this is almost really good.

The Cestus Deception by Steven Barnes, this is a Star Wars Clone Wars' novel and I'm liking it. The author has a good feel for the world and I can so far picture it all happening during the animated series which I loved. It also stars Obi-Wan and Kit Fisto, I love both of them and its wonderful to see more of how they work together.

Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis
by Kim Todd is a fascinating book about a woman scientist who lived in the late 1600s. The author does a great job of showing how she fit into the world of science and commerce in her time and the art is beautiful. Smithsonian magazine just had an her as there's another book about her coming out this year. On their site, they have digital images of her art which I know I've seen on cards.

Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War by Karen Abbott, this book got a lot of praise when it came out and it really deserves it. The book is fast moving, alternating between the four women, and showing how at times their stories intersect. Its a reminder of how small the United States can be sometimes and how brave, determined and horrible people can be. I also find Civil War history fascinating and this book does a great job of looking at women and the different kinds of home fronts.

What I'm reading next

I'm hoping to be able to get a copy of Bone Gap by Laura Ruby from the library. I've heard amazing things about this book and have wanted to read it since I heard about it at ALA Midwinter back in January. Recently its actually on the shelf at the library so I want to snag it. I might also read Only a Promise, the newest Survivor's Club novel by Mary Balogh.
ceitfianna: (a writer's life)
[personal profile] in_the_blue tagged me on this writing meme:
Pull seven lines from the seventh page of your WIP, then you're supposed to tag seven other writers.

Most of the things I write are lucky to be a page so seven doesn't happen but I'll pull up the WiP that I've worked on most recently and do lines from that.

7 lines, actually more but this makes more sense from my October Daye and The Raven Cycle crossover which exists because I want Gansey and Quentin to meet.

“Watch it,” he protected his journal and his book on the language of birds as he looked up and glared at the boy who didn’t seem the sort to trip. Blond hair, neat and pressed and stumbling from something, Gansey was certain that he’d heard a French curse, “I was, they weren’t.”

It took him a moment but the other boy had his balance and Gansey wondered if he was a dancer, Ronan held himself in a sharper version of that stance, elegant but poised for something, “Just be careful.”

“I didn’t think I spilled anything on you or stuff,” Then he glanced down and Gansey watched for the reaction, this book wasn’t anything too special but it showed the echoes of the Raven King, “Ravens and omens? Do you believe in that?”

In terms of tagging, I'm not sure. I'm always interested in what everyone's writing so answer if you want to.

A meme

ceitfianna: (a writer's life)
From [personal profile] umadoshi a meme I like as I'm starting to reach that moment of eek, a week from today I'll be in Chicago for Midwinter and I'm getting substitute calls. All of this is good but a lot at once so I'm going to do a writing meme.

When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs. Now all of these WiPs are ones that I haven't touched in a while, maybe all the upcoming travel will help to get my writing game in gear again.

The first is a bit that was originally in my [community profile] ineedmyfics story about Sam Wilson but didn't fit.

“What happened next, Miss James?” The lawyer’s voice was kind as Teresa, who had been a mechanic in Iraq clenched her hands and sought out his eyes. He gave her a nod, he believed in her and understood what had happened.

Then there's an AU about Charles and Erik where they're both captured and their memories are messed with.

She gave him a look and he managed a smile for her as she left, he didn’t want her to become annoyed with him, but he needed space and Erik. Why was it so important to have Erik there?

The last one is me going through the October Daye books with a slant on Quentin and Raj, this is a moment from Late Eclipses.

Quentin grumbled before Raj laid down on top of him and immediately fell to sleep with a rumbling in his chest that felt sort of nice. The way Raj was it was hard to move, so he ended up sagging and finally sleeping until the alarm on his phone went off and he felt Raj’s claws in his legs, “Ow, get up.”

I could easily rec far more than three but I think I'm going to rec a few recent fics that surprised me with how much I liked them. Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Prince Sameth/Nicholas Sayre
Characters: Prince Sameth, Nicholas Sayre, Lirael (Old Kingdom)
Additional Tags: Pining, Angst, Large holes in the ground, Lirael is awesome, magic is confusing
Summary:

“Let’s go on an adventure,” Nick said.
“What are you doing,” Sam asked, “with my breakfast tray?”

The Old Kingdom is a favorite fandom and Sameth and Nick are two of my favorite characters but I'd never really seen them as a pairing. This fic convinces me along with being a wonderful post-canon look at the world.

Eyewitness Account (4574 words) by failsafe
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Flash (TV 2014)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Barry Allen/Iris West
Characters: Iris West, Barry Allen, Joe West, Caitlin Snow, Cisco Ramon
Additional Tags: Fluff, Slice of Life, Banter, First Kiss, Hypoglycemia, Unresolved Romantic Tension
Summary:

A formless and featureless future is full of potential, and in this particular case it's pretty and frictionless. At some point in time, Iris knows the identity of the Flash, and in the middle of an awards ceremony there is a small surprise. A day (more accurately, a few hours) in the life, but not an insignificant day for Barry and Iris.

The Flash is my newest fandom and I love this fic because it captures all of the characters being a found family and brings together the couple I want to see while feeling like an episode.

Fandom: October Daye Series - Seanan McGuire

Relationships: Raj/Chelsea Ames
Characters: Chelsea Ames, Quentin (Toby Daye), Raj (Toby Daye), The Luidaeg (Toby Daye), Etienne (Toby Daye), Toby Daye
Additional Tags: Age Regression/De-Aging
Summary:

I’ve always thought of myself as someone who can deal well with weird stuff. It’s just a case of accepting what’s in front of you, and making a plan about how you’re going to figure it out. A childhood hiding the fact that you’re only half-human and an academic for a mother will do that for you.

This, however, was going to take a few minutes to get my head around.

This is an October Daye fic that has three main characters deaged. Its not a trope that I normally like or even think about but it works. Also its from the point of view of Chelsea Ames who's a character I find fascinating. I find Chelsea, Raj and Quentin's take on all the stuff going on around them intriguing and want more, this fic answers some of that more for me.

Its windy and cold today and the world is being scary once more. Keep warm and safe everyone.

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge is one that I hadn't really thought about before though I know my character type for RP.

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs.

Families and friendship, the kinds that are difficult and that are chosen by the characters. In stories, the ones I love are where you can see people coming together and going, oh, you get it. I also love seeing the domestic contentment that happens when you've found your people and aren't off saving the world. This is one reason that the new Flash television show hooked me so quickly as its all about who do you trust, who do you love and who helps you become a better person. I love it when these relationships are poked at too such as Charles and Raven's relationship throughout the two newest X-Men movies. That being a found family is a complicated and never easy place and when writers go into that, it makes me happy. The bumps and troubles make when it works so much sweeter.

A few of my fandoms that hit this are October Daye, Incryptid, Hexwood, Magid Series, Chrestomanci, Leverage, the Raven Cycle, Robin Hood, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, MCU, X-Men.

This Yuletide was full of a lot of fics that were all about these created families.

Impulse Control about the after of Hexwood.

Eyewitness Account that hits all that I love about The Flash as we see everyone understanding and watching out for each other.

It Takes a Village, a wonderful Vorkosigan fic about planning the wedding and seeing all the people around Ekaterin and Miles.

Ready or Not, a Fangirl fic that's all about finding your own tribe.

A Quiet Night, domestic fluff of October Daye from the point of view of May.

The Eighth Bell, a post-canon Old Kingdom fic where everyone redefines themselves and learns to go forward.

Honestly, I could link my entire reading history on Ao3 to answer this but these are my recent favorites. I'm going to end by linking a wonderful Leverage fanvid that also captures found family so well.
