Happy Galentine's Day! Its a joy to know all of you and I hope that this weekend, everyone gets a chance to do something indulgent and fun. I'm planning on seeing Jupiter Ascending tomorrow and maybe writing some fic.

Job stuff is happening to keep me busy since I returned from the Midwest. I'm feeling hopeful that doors are opening as there's another part time opportunity along with substitute calls and school jobs appearing. Its nice to be someplace without lots and lots of snow though its still cold.

I'm going to do a variation on the letter meme from [personal profile] just_ann_now, she gave me T. Comment if you want to play.

Something I hate: Taxes, Turbotax does help a lot but tax forms always seem to be written in another language.

Something I love: Tea, but in particular Earl Grey for fannish reasons and because its soothing along with providing caffeine. I have a huge collection of teas and tea stuff, but end up coming back to Earl grey.

Somewhere I've been: Tauranga, New Zealand, I had lunch there with a family friend after she looked at a trade in car. I was staying with her in Rotorua. Its a beautiful city on the water and somewhere I have a picture of her on the beach.

Somewhere I'd like to go: Tenth Arrondissement in Paris to visit my new nephew.

Someone I know: TLvop who's awesome.

A film I like: The Cutting Edge

New additions.

A book I love: Tam Lin by Pamela Dean

An Author: Tamora Pierce

A meme

ceitfianna: (a writer's life)
From [personal profile] umadoshi a meme I like as I'm starting to reach that moment of eek, a week from today I'll be in Chicago for Midwinter and I'm getting substitute calls. All of this is good but a lot at once so I'm going to do a writing meme.

When you see this, share 3 random lines from 3 WIPs. Now all of these WiPs are ones that I haven't touched in a while, maybe all the upcoming travel will help to get my writing game in gear again.

The first is a bit that was originally in my [community profile] ineedmyfics story about Sam Wilson but didn't fit.

“What happened next, Miss James?” The lawyer’s voice was kind as Teresa, who had been a mechanic in Iraq clenched her hands and sought out his eyes. He gave her a nod, he believed in her and understood what had happened.

Then there's an AU about Charles and Erik where they're both captured and their memories are messed with.

She gave him a look and he managed a smile for her as she left, he didn’t want her to become annoyed with him, but he needed space and Erik. Why was it so important to have Erik there?

The last one is me going through the October Daye books with a slant on Quentin and Raj, this is a moment from Late Eclipses.

Quentin grumbled before Raj laid down on top of him and immediately fell to sleep with a rumbling in his chest that felt sort of nice. The way Raj was it was hard to move, so he ended up sagging and finally sleeping until the alarm on his phone went off and he felt Raj’s claws in his legs, “Ow, get up.”

My week is off to a good start, I have plans for my interview tomorrow and am about to buy some new luggage for my trip at the end of the month. Think good thoughts for me tomorrow at 1 pm. Today's question for [community profile] snowflake_challenge is one that I find interesting.

Day 5

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity?

Fandom's always been there for me even though I didn't truly understand what it was that I was connecting to until college.

As a little girl, I fell in love with Paul Creswick's Robin Hood, the N.C. Wyeth illustrations pulled me into a different world. Robin Hood is still that touchstone story for me, I get annoyed at retellings I don't like, but love talking about what works and what doesn't. At the same time and earlier, I was reading through and having read to me the Narnia books. There was a day camp I went to where a part of every day was being read to. This wonderful man named King who had a deep voice and a beard read the Narnia books, that was where I learned the love of sharing books with others. Also at this same time, I was watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, which combined with Robin Hood inspired my first works of fanfic. Will Scarlett ending up on the Enterprise and being friends with Wesley Crusher through weird magic. I used to write in the back of my school notebooks, have the notebook open, flip to the back and write stories there then turn to the notes when I needed to take them. In a box, I still have these old school notebooks and later all the journals people gave me full of words.

At the age of twelve, I went to this wonderful summer program, Longacre where another world of interacting and creating opened up to me through playing Dungeons & Dragons. My first character and still the only one I've ever played in D&D was a half-elf bard and I made up a backstory for her that my GM liked so much, she started at level 5. That GM taught me that its possible to step into a world with words and that dice and all are beside the point, he also lent me R.A. Salvatore books to show me how rich the D&D world was. I was also taking theater classes and thinking about the importance of background, how even if you don't hear the details, every character has their backstory.

By the time I started doing LARPing and entered the World of Darkness, the idea of being able to write a history for my character was natural. The World of Darkness showed me a wider way of interacting as there were rulebooks, novels, pins, all this wonderful stuff that came along with this world. Then the internet was there and I could see other fans, I once even tried RPing in the offical Star Trek chatroom like set ups.

In college, I found Harry Potter and then an amazing friend showed me how to find fanfiction and I had that moment of oh, this is home. In the midst of writing papers, I would spend time on the Sugarquill while I ran my own Changeling: the Dreaming LARP and tabletop game. In my creative writing classes, I tried to slip the fantasy of Changeling: the Dreaming into my work. It only partly worked, Fangirl perfectly captured how some teachers don't get fantasy or fanfiction.

From that same friend after college, I was told about [community profile] milliways_bar and learned that I could actually roleplay my favorite fandom characters. I began with Will Scarlett and now play ten characters. Milliways brought me friends who shared where they wrote and suddenly I was sharing my own fanfiction, first on my LJ, then later on Ao3 and participating in Yuletide, Narnia Fic Exchange, Ineedmyfics and ficathons.

My user name ceitfianna was created my sophomore year of college, my partner at the time had an LJ invite code. I thought it might be a good way to keep in touch while studying abroad in Greece. Ceit is the Scots Gaelic spelling for my first name, Kate, and one of the few languages I've found where I can find my name as it is. I'm a plain Kate, where its not short for anything. Fianna is the name of a mythic tribe of warriors in Ancient Ireland and a werewolf tribe from Werewolf: the Apocalypse. I honestly don't recall exactly why I decided to combine them, but its stuck and is how I'm known on LJ, DW and Twitter.

On Archive of our Own, my name [archiveofourown.org profile] FiKate is a reference to my AIM screenname which was the name of a character from a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game that only lasted one summer; Fiona. In Milliways, a huge amount of interaction happens in a chat room and since my screenname is Fiona, I was dubbed Fi. Yet there are Milliways' people who call me Kate and when I was creating my Archive of our Own name, I thought that I would combine them.

My Tumblr name on the other hand is something different as I didn't know how much it would connect to other areas of my life. Its [tumblr.com profile] atthelamppost as I'm currently feeling at a crossroads while I try to figure out a way to do what I love and be paid for it. Its inspired by Narnia, which is one of my oldest fandoms and one that I'm still a bit weird about. I haven't read The Last Battle, because when I was about eleven or twelve, I decided I didn't want the series to end. I'm 33 and still haven't read even though a little while ago, my father read through the entire series for the first time. Maybe I will someday. I've also considered getting a tattoo of the lamppost as an iconic image for me.

The last name I have online is for my librarian/professional blog, that I really need to update which is called [wordpress.com profile] nurturingstories. This is because I consider myself a storyteller and a good teacher and librarian is all about stories. We all have our own stories and children's stories need to be nurtured to allow them to grow.
ceitfianna: (Tumnus)
I still have days open on this meme, leave me topics or fic prompts over here.

Before I start on the meme, I wanted to mention how amazing my yesterday was. I'd heard from my mentor that there was an opening at another local library, so my mom and I decided to drive out to get a look at it. The library was a little odd, because of a strange interaction but also a good one with the people at the desk. From that awkwardness, we decided to head to another nearby library and found out that they have an opening which I applied to today. It would be doing what I want to, not full time but enough hours that I could make it work with other options. I'm feeling rather hopeful.

For today, [personal profile] dodger_sister asked me favorite Christmas memory.

There are two memories that are tied for me on this and both happened when I was younger. The first one was when I got Kirsten, the American Girl doll for Christmas. I was younger than ten and I loved American Girl, I was slowly collecting all of the books for the original three. Every month, I think I would get the catalog and it was a dream catalog for me, I didn't expect to ever own one of the dolls since I knew how expensive they were. I remember in the kitchen and throughout those years, my parents explaining how much they cost and I came to accept I wouldn't get one. It wasn't always easy but I manaaged. I had friends who had them, but my focus at that point was on the books which felt possible. Kirsten was my favorite because we have the same birthday.

Then on Christmas Day, after we had opened most of the presents, my parents brought out another box for me. It was Kirsten, they hadn't put her under the tree, because the size of the box was too recognizable. That was one of the best Christmases and I still have her and many great memories connected to her.

The second one is from when I think I was a little younger, I don't remember how old but also elementary school. My brother's room was next to mine and he put a sign up telling me to stay out, he normally didn't do that, so I was confused. Then I found out the reason on Christmas Day when this tiny kitten, all white except for a black V on her head and the ends of her paws was brought down for me. She was named Mary and the first pet who was truly mine. Sadly she didn't live very long, but I loved her a lot.
ceitfianna: (running towards a happy ending)
I've now applied to be a substitute, helped out a fun, charity yard sale, found some great finds at the library book sale and had some lazy days. Tomorrow I have an allergy appointment but the next two weeks are all about finishing two exchange fics. In the spirit of feeling like there's no way I can finish anything, have a fic meme from [personal profile] snacky. If something's from an exchange, I'll shift it but I don't think either of my recipients follow me.

Question which I think I asked before. Has anyone else watched Boardwalk Empire? I just watched the first season after loving the second and third when in Michigan and I think I might rewatch them. Its not my normal kind of show with how violent it is, but basically Margaret's character pulled me in. Also as someone who grew up with visits to Ocean City, New Jersey, the setting interests me.

Leave a comment with one of these and I'll post, without editing*:

FIRST — the first two sentences of my current project
LAST — the most recently written two sentences of my current project
NEXT — the next line. meaning i will finish the sentence I’m on and write a new one, which you’ll get.
[insert prompt here] — you post a prompt, and i’ll write three sentences based on that prompt, set in the same time/setting as my current project
THE END — i’ll make up an ending, or post the ending if i’ve written it
BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project
POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective

*okay, I might have to edit some names out of an exchange fic, but that's about it.
ceitfianna: (running towards a happy ending)
The world has been rainy and strange these past two days as I get ready to head off to an interview. Yesterday, I dreamed of the interview and last night I dreamed of Charles and Erik arranging an art auction to raise money for mutants. They were both nice but strange dreams. I'm taking care of all my bits and pieces before heading out for this trip and trying not to get sick. Tea is helping a good deal as does the fact that nothing is too far away.

In a sure sign of how I'm nervous, I've written fic thanks to a great ficathon that Ashie recommended.

The past two days have been rainy and grey, which made it hard to do all the things I wanted to. But I'm working on getting myself back into a schedule for fact-checking as well as more job stuff though today I was reminded how the librarian job market is a hirer's one. In the mail, I received a sorry, but no thanks letter from a library I applied to I think in February.

I was wondering how those of you who've done the sort of freelance editing that fact-checking falls under put it on your resume since each assignment takes about a month. Also I think I need to redo my cover letter, I hate cover letters since I never know what's going to click and I'm worried what I have now hasn't been working. Job searching suck but it helps to know that the fact-checking place trusted me enough to send me another book.

In fun news, I stumbled across a commentfest that looks like a lot of fun and will be of interest to many of you.

Sparrow Hill Road is being a fantastic read and today, I went to read it at the closet to a diner I can find around here since I've been craving pancakes. I really miss The Broken Egg in Ann Arbor and The Pancake House on Woodward Ave, there aren't enough proper breakfast places around here.
ceitfianna: (pooka illustration)
I finished my fact-checking job! I found out that I really like fact-checking even though it kind of eats all my mental space. It reminds me of when I was working at the Seaport Museum and I got lost in logbooks to prepare them for archive precis, but this time I'm making sure the history given to kids is right. Also people pay me to go poke history and go, you know, that seems way too simple. What's really going on? I love it and they pay me. I don't know if I'll get another book since I'll be traveling to DC the rest of the week and then off to LA for a job interview the next week but this is a freelance job I could do.

Since I'm uploading and emailing it all away and tomorrow driving to DC for the job fair, I'm going to open myself up to prompts. I miss writing and road trips are the best for giving me time to think and hopefully words to come out. DC folks, I'll have my laptop and if you need my telephone number, DM or PM or whatever me, because want to see you guys. I recall a fantastic Mexican place that I went with college friends somewhere around Dupont Circle that I want to find again and its Winter Soldier time. Movie watching probably won't happen as that always requires major planning but coffee, dinner, whatever works for me. I'll be free after 4:30 on Friday and all day Saturday.

Now for a great prompt meme from [personal profile] walksbyherself. Below the cut are One Hundred Prompts. Pick one or two or however many, give me characters and get a drabble or more. Open to AUs, RPs, everything. I want to write again.

100 Prompts! )

And I really need to do a road trip or something up New England way as this fact-checking reminded me that I last was a tourist in Boston when I was in high school. It was a marching band trip and a lot of fun but a few decades away.
ceitfianna: (Wellington)
This was an odd Monday, the power was off in the library so I had nothing to do and went and read in Starbucks for a while. Also yesterday was spent cooking and then enjoying hosting with my parents a movie group they're a part of, we talked about films from the Rehoboth Film Festival and others. Apparently The Book Thief was quite popular, which makes me curious. From what I've read of reviews online, it seems one of those books that people either love or they hate. Also I've been introducing mainly my mother but also my father to more Doctor Who with a focus on Ten as he's my favorite. I hadn't realized before just how much Russell T. Davies used authors as linchpins of stories; Dickens, Shakespeare, Christie.

Oh and I finally got more words for my Yuletide, it still doesn't really have much form to it but there are over 600 words. This might be one where I throw the words out on the page and then beg my betas help in making sense of it.

Now for the December Meme, which is still very open. You don't need to leave ideas on that entry, leave them on any and they will be written. I might end up extending it into January as I'm loving the questions I'm getting.

Back to the point for today [personal profile] swankyfunk asked me: Out of all the places you've visited, where would you most like to live and why?

Now I'm going to do top five for this one, because narrowing it down to just one is really hard.

1-Wellington, New Zealand: I liked who I was in Wellington. I found a gaming group, I was able to wander. There were cafes to read in, museums to wander into, water, hills and even used bookstores that didn't eat all my money. Also the best public library that I've been to, okay one of my top ten favorite libraries. I could have lived in that library with no problem. The only true con to Wellington is that its so far away from the US and my family and friends here. When I came back from New Zealand, I wanted to try and meet and connect with all these amazing people I'd met through Milliways, but it stalled. First the recession, then grad school in Michigan and now I'm here in Delaware and the oomph to go see people hasn't happened as I'd like. DC, Maryland and Virginia people, I want to connect with you. Yet there are also people on that side of the world as well, its tough.

2-Dublin, Ireland: I spent a week in Dublin in 2002 when I had finished my semester abroad in Athens and I loved it. Again a city I could walk that had water but also art and history and all those things that I loved. I would love the chance to live there and know it better.

3-Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Growing up for me, Philly was the city that was just a train ride away. I spent high school going to South Street, the year after I graduated college had an internship at a museum on Penn's Landing, its my favorite city. I love the history of it, Ben Franklin walked those streets and the river going through and its close to DC and New York but a little cheaper. There are great restaurants and wonderful neighborhoods, the Mummers, Reading Terminal Market. I always expected that I would end up near it because it was where I grew up and I'd still like to.

4-San Francisco/Central California: My mother grew up in Carmel-by-the-Sea so I spent a few weeks ever summer going to Carmel to spend time with my grandmother, aunt, uncle and cousin. Also a visit to San Francisco where my great aunt lived and I loved it. One reason I adore New Zealand is that it reminds me of that part of California. I've only visited it but I'd love to try living there.

5-Seattle: My other aunt and uncle live in Seattle and its another city that I adore visiting. It feels like New Zealand and its the Pacific Northwest and god, I would love to work at that library.

As you can see, I'm pretty evenly split between East and West Coast with New Zealand kind of splitting the difference. I have learned about myself that I'm happiest in a city with some sort of waterfront whether its river or ocean, water makes it all better. I do love New York City but to me it always felt like a city to dip into versus one to live in. This is probably because I've never lived there and its been a place I go for a few days at a time, but its never pulled me the same ways that these others have. At this point, I would just love a job near a city where I knew one or two people because I do need that social grounding.

One thing that wrecked me last year was not really knowing anyone, Rick was too far away in Ann Arbor and people were nice at work but that's not quite enough. I did like Ann Arbor as well but it felt too far away from everything though it was a great city. If I could have moved Ann Arbor farther east, I would have been happy and found a job there.
ceitfianna: (Bones Oh Please)
I feel accomplished. I've started the process to become a substitute teacher, sent off thank you notes and have sorted all the books in my room. The last isn't as major as it sounds since most of my books are in storage, these are just the ones I've picked up since moving here and left over from ALA. Many are going to better places as I won't reread them and I was reminded of those I do want to read. I feel like I'm getting out of the low place I got into in November when it felt like there was no chance of me finding another job. Instead it seems as if maybe there is hope out there.

Now for the December meme which isn't filled up, come and leave me things to write about here as much of the month is open.

For today [personal profile] quarter_to_five asked for: show/episode/book/movie/something that you just hated.

This one is really easy to answer as I recently rewatched Bull Durham, which is a movie I love and probably created my small crush on Kevin Costner as a girl. Sadly that crush took a major hit when Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves came out.

Now anyone who's followed me for a while knows that Robin Hood is one of those stories that I have a deep and abiding attachment to and ideas of how I think it should be done. When Prince of Thieves came out, I was I think twelve or thirteen and it was the first movie that I had a truly visceral, my god what have you done to the story I love reaction. I saw it with my best friend and her family, we ate dinner out in the car, cold chicken, came in and I remember staring at the witch scene. Then Robin came back from the Crusades which is something I don't get. Robin is of Nottingham and Sherwood, Richard comes back from the Crusades and Costner was awful. Then Alan Rickman camped it up, which he did well, Andie McDowell tried, she did try but had no chance. I spent most of that movie staring at the screen in horror at what had happened to my story. Actors I've liked went far down in my perception due to, Christian Slater is a good actor, he is not meant for that sort of movie. There were moments of oh, Wolf, oh Wolf, he's rather like my Will, he deserved a better movie as did Morgan Freeman's character. A generic fantasy or medieval piece would have been just fine, not Robin Hood. Its not the only medieval story to take from. When it was a movie to watch at a girl scout camp, I hid from it because of how much I disliked it. The more I think on it, the more awful moments I remember that felt tossed in for the sake of let's put it in there. It never felt coherent, I didn't care for anyone and it was an utter mess.

I did like the soundtrack because the music feels so separated from the story to me that I can enjoy. Also I played it in marching band so it attached to band practices which helps. This is rather rambling but this is truly one of the few things in the world that will make me go, no, get it away from me.
ceitfianna: (hot cider)
I had a good day, I woke up and went to the local library for the volunteer appreciation meal. The food was delicious and there's such a wonderful community there, also my mentor recommended someone else to look over my resume. Then as a gift, I was given a small poinsettia, which made me smile.

Sadly there was a low point when I went to Starbucks before heading to see Frozen. I was sitting and reading and the couple sitting next to me was awful, everything they said was a variation on things used to be better and 'these people' covering migrants, young people, women and even soldiers didn't appreciate what they have. The bit that made me truly consider speaking up was how the man was going on about how in the 1950s suddenly housewives lives were so much easier they had nothing to do but spend their time lazing around all day. After all that was what it seemed like his mother was doing and that women might say they wanted equality but if offered a pedestal, they would hop right up. Somehow the woman he was with kept nodding and not disagreeing, I didn't get it but it did end. It made it hard for me to concentrate on my reading and those of you on Twitter saw my grumbling, because honestly wanting to be respected and paid well isn't being entitled. This shouldn't be that hard.

After I went off to see Frozen which was wonderful. I loved how the heart of the movie was the sisters and trying to fix a broken family along with helping a kingdom. Also the chant/singing at the start and end of the movie gave me chills and seemed almost Polynesian. I don't know if I want the entire soundtrack but I get parts of it.

[personal profile] lady_bols: Favourite TV shows, at least three, and why you like them. <3

Now for the question for the December meme, this is going to be hard one as I love a lot of shows. And the last few nights I've been dipping into Netflix Streaming which always reminds me of shows that I love but have forgotten so as with these others, these are the first few that I think of. If asked on a another day, the answer would be different.

Firefly: Created families and ensembles are some of my favorite things to see in a show and Firefly does them right. I also love cowboys and space cowboys are just better. I didn't see Firefly when it was on TV, but instead was introduced to it in New Zealand. Some of my friends there lent me their set and I marathoned all of them in I think two or three nights and fell in love. I adore all the relationships and thanks to Milliways have been able to see some of what else might happen. This is one of those cases where Milliways made me appreciate the show even more since the incredible players in Milliways expanded the world and added even more depth to what was there to begin with.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I started watching Buffy when it first aired but then stopped before getting reintroduced to it in college. I have a lot of good memories of watching Buffy life with friends and talking about how strange and wonderful it is. The friendships and loves feel real and while sometimes the plots are a bit silly, the heart is always there. Joss knows how to do ensembles. I've been reminded of Buffy mainly due to Tumblr where gifs of it keep appearing.

Elementary: I'm currently rather far behind on this show but I grew up watching Jeremy Brett's Holmes and I feel like this show captures the feel of the Holmses' stories. I love the push and pull of Joan and Sherlock as well as the sense that its actually happening in a New York City that I could visit. The mysteries aren't anything special but to me that's never been the point of the Holmes' stories, they're more about the back and forth of Holmes and Watson.

Teen Wolf: I marathoned this show because I was curious about where [personal profile] alexiscartwheel's Stiles came from. Then discovered it was on Netflix Streaming and lost a few nights sleep to it. I have a soft spot for shows about young people trying to grow up and find their way which Teen Wolf hits in a way I like. I appreciate the variety of families, how nothing is easily solved. It would be nice if the plots made more actual sense but Stiles and Scott, Scott and Allison, Mama McCall, Danny, Isaac, Derek and the rest of them make me happy. This is one of those shows that I would love to actually write some fanfic for as its all about friendship and love and family. I have a fanfic started crossing it over with Sleepy Hollow that I need to write more of.

TaleSpin: This is the show of my childhood from Disney Afternoon and I've bought some of the DVDs and would like to in time get the rest. Its a show about a created family set in a vaguely steampunk world and I love it. If I could ever figure out how to RP or properly write some of the fanfic in my head of it I would, but cartoon worlds are tricky to write.

There, that's the five that immediately come to mind and I feel like they give a good sense of the variety of what I watch. I do love reality TV shows but I don't come back to them as often as I do these.

I forgot to mention that I finally wrote an entry on my librarian blog that I've been meaning to since the start of November; Connecting through Art about the Film Festival I went to and a sculpture garden I went to after Thanksgiving.

A Meme

ceitfianna: (running towards a happy ending)
Today has been a nice quiet day as I spent a lot of it reading the newest Elemental Master's book and then went to a neighborhood Thanksgiving party that was relaxing and nice. The coming week will be busy as I'm off to visit a private school that a family friend's husband, who was a friend before he died was chaplain at and who is introducing me to the librarian. Its where they filmed Dead Poet's Society, there will be some inner fangirl squee in the midst of the informational interview. Life is good and I feel like I'm starting to get myself out of the low place I've been the past couple of weeks, now if I can just get my yuletide to behave for me. There are words but they're not in a definite shape, which I'd like them to be.

Link to a fun fic-a-thon.

Request away! I AM AT YOUR DISPOSAL.

I realized that I probably should update as my last one was when I was having a pretty rough day. This week has actually turned out okay, I got a lost trying to find the car insurance place on Tuesday but found it on Thursday and got that sorted. Soon my car will be back with Delaware plates, which feels like another good step. I applied for a job that I wouldn't have even thought about before but Quinn pointed it out and I went I could do that. Whenever it comes to job stuff, I try to keep myself good and open. Last year was tough but it taught me that I can accomplish a good deal and so I know when I find a place where people get me, I'll do even better. It feels better to be here where I know I'm in a safe harbor and really see all the options.

The weather here is wonderful, crisp days with the sun out and my parents are away for a few days so I've been enjoying feeling like I'm getting my writing groove back once more. Expect more EPs in Milliways. I have an idea for a Teen Wolf and Sleepy Hollow crossover that I want to start and also I'm thinking about digging back into my works in progress. My various exchange fics were well received which always makes me feel good about my writing and I wrote some nice little fics this ficFriday.

Saturday was the opening of the Ao3 Collection for I Need My Fics 2013 and there are some great stories in it. So far I've only dipped into the 23 works but they cover a wonderful variety of fandoms from Les Mis to Marvel Movies.

The gorgeous fic I received was Private Relations, a fic that not only ties the X-Men movies into the Marvel movieverse but has added Carol Danvers and thoughts on mutants. I highly recommend it. I wrote Heading North, a story about Rogue set before she meets up with Wolverine in the first X-Men movie, strong warning for sexual assault as it takes place while she's hitchhiking. Go read, comment and kudos on the wonderful fics from this exchange that's becoming a mainstay of my summer.

In other writing news, today I wrote a blog post on my librarian journal called Lego Leagues and Public Libraries about what I'm up to now.

Slowly I'm getting up to pace with sending out more applications and tying up the last loose ends from Michigan. I hope soon to be able to dive back into my works in progress fics and maybe finish a few of them.

Its also finally starting to feel like Fall here with crisper nights but still glorious clear days. I've been taking a lot of pictures as that's where my instinct for art has been coming out but I'm shifting it back towards writing.

Since my last post, there's a lot to catch up on. I spent most of Friday walking around New York City, getting lost around Little Italy, losing wonderful amounts of time at The Strand's cheap book racks and then getting to go to the New Zealand mission to the UN. Also there was lunch with [personal profile] skygiants and more hanging out with [profile] arushindoll. I love being close enough that I can actually go and visit New York City again, because whenever I go, I end up feeling revitalized by how alive and active the city is. My feet weren't happy with me because I ended up truly footsore but I have good sandals so few blisters.

The alum reception for Victoria University was charming, it was very New Zealand; not too formal, great food and wine and an interesting lecture on climate change. It reminded me how lucky I am to have connections to New Zealand and that someday, I will get myself back there. I also have found a good way to get to NY and other points north from Lewes as with my car, I can drive to stations that have direct routes instead of navigating multiple transit systems. I plan on having more trips to New York and DC and Philly in the near future, some hopefully for interviews but mainly to see people.

Then Saturday I traveled back to have a nice dinner with my parents, older brother and nieces as we all prepared for my father's birthday on Sunday. The party went really well. I made a huge batch of my chickpea salad recipe and had lots of great conversations of people going what are you up to and how are you doing? There was only one talk that made me wince about libraries since there's someone who works with Johns Hopkins and they're removing all books from their library. The wince wasn't the person I was having the conversation with just knowing that such a large organization has made that choice to go fully online as medical journals as so expensive, that they're worth more than books. Its a tough turn of events and it worries me that such an institution has gone so completely to the only instead of looking for a place in between.

Monday was restful, I started the day by going to the local library to help with shelving books and talking to the youth director who's a mentor of mine. This Sunday is the first meeting of their LEGO robotics team so I'm going to go help her. Robotics is something I want to know about and it will be great to get experience with it.

Tuesday was my sister's birthday and we went to a pretty nature center and watched the birds. I took a lot of pictures then we had a quiet evening. This morning my mother had cataract surgery which seems to have gone well and I'm trying to get myself a looking for jobs routine.

This morning I was again woken by a hopeful phone call from a school, this time on the east coast. I will find something. Also moving is proceeding forward as my bank account goes down due to bills but I'll figure it out. The heat finally broke here as a major thunderstorm swept through and then left the sky looking beautiful.

I just had a conversation with my parents about how its easier to break this lease than the one in Ann Arbor since this area of Michigan has a lot of people pass through. To say aloud, I don't want to be in Michigan anymore, especially not this part of Michigan feels amazing. A huge weight is off me as I start thinking about moving east again, working at the library in Lewes as I search for a job in the part of the country I actually want to be in.

Chances to hang out with friends who live in Maryland and Virgina and on the east coast instead of feeling stuck in limbo out here in Michigan. I don't know how quickly any of this will happen. I'm going to run some errands and on my way back stop in at the rental office to see how tricky it is to end the lease early. I think as long as I give thirty days notice, I should be okay since the lease is far kinder than the one in Ann Arbor where housing was tougher to find. I also realized that yesterday was a month since the last day of school. Time feels so out of joint for me since it hasn't been that long, but my life is in a strange spot.

Oh and I found another job to apply for, a teen librarian position in Arizona. I'm happy to move again for a job, but next time I'm going to be more prepared. If a job wants me, I'd like their help in settling in. That doesn't have to be money just advice and some care.

The next step starts to feel closer and more hopeful. Since its Friday and FicFriday on Twitter has been quiet due to the holiday weekend, I'll take prompts here and on Twitter. Just @ me over there.

Leave me a prompt and I'll write you a one to two sentence fic, possibly more but I try to keep it short to work with the Twitter part.

ETA: It looks like this move will be simpler than my other one. Next part is to contact the movers and find out their dates, then get back to the rental company.

My last couple of days have been a mix of lazy and not fun due to health. I spent last night coughing up far too much gunk from my throat and blowing the rest out of my nose. At the moment I'm feeling closer to normal but still worn out. For the Fourth, I did almost nothing which was what I needed after how busy the conference and travel were. This weekend, I'm getting a visitor who is all about a lazy time, which should be nice.

Though I'm not doing a lot, I have been getting things done. I completed the online application for the job I had an interview at, it was a really annoying form. One of those where it claimed to be saving it for you but really wasn't, but its done now. I've also added another part to my conference write up on my librarian blog about the school library program I went to.

Yesterday was wonderful in Milliways with the Hulk plot and me and Charles sharing hurting heads. I might end up opening that EP again today, last night I was too out of it to start more threads.

I have a number of writing projects that I need to get started on; book reviews on Goodreads, more conference write up and starting a fic for an exchange. In the spirit of help me find words, here's a meme I love from [personal profile] newredshoes:

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I will give you 1-3 sentences (or more) from or about it.

My mind was a rather strange place last night as I dreamed that I was not Batman and not exactly Bryce Wayne but someone in between. I was investigating something at a girl's boarding school that reminded me of the main castle in Prague. As in there was the entire little city in this small space, it was a claustrophobic sort of dream. Also at some point in the dream, I turned into a student who was lost and couldn't figure anything out.

I'm pretty sure I know why I had such a dream, that was because last night I watched the season finale of Hannibal and then before going to bed finished reading The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie and there were unexpected parallels going on.

Spoilers for Hannibal, entire season and A.B.C Murders )

Otherwise, I'm finding it weird to not be heading off to work and so am spending a lot of my time writing and preparing to head to the ALA conference in Chicago from June 27th to July 1st. I'm excited and scared as I know there's more I need to be doing to really be at my best for looking for a job. I have blog posts that I should get writing but mainly that words I keep getting at the moment are fandom ones. I did get some minicards made up for myself, which I love. They have all my pertinent information on them and as my Wordpress blog is pretty much my digital portfolio, they should work.

On Wednesday, I went to the Detroit Zoo and had an amazing time, it was wonderful to just wander around and enjoy the crowds of kids and the beautiful weather. The only annoying part was that when I was trying to get a picture of the prairie dogs, I missed where the concrete changed and skinned my elbow and acquired a nice bruise on my knee. I'm still a little sore since I didn't fall all the way down, I took a major bump. I think I might end up doing another post with just those pictures or at least some of my favorites for those who don't follow me elsewhere to see them.

In terms of fandom writing, I wrote a femslash piece for the Marvel Femslash Prompt Fest, its a little out of my normal round but the prompt clicked for me. Harder than Steel, which is Raven/Emma and explicit.

Today has also been a busy day as the DE was a prompt one and I wrote a number of fics, some of I might expand out and I'm still open for more prompts there.

It was also FicFriday over on Twitter and I'm still taking prompts there as well.

My original plan for today was to go out somewhere either to the DIA or the Detroit Zoo, but instead I slept in wonderfully long and late. It turns out that I needed it and then I went and enjoyed a nice lunch. I opened up my package from my parents which had homemade chocolate-hazelnut brownies, which are delicious, lovely earrings with a circle of red and blue glass and a pile of Agatha Christie mysteries. One of them is a Poirot, which I recently bought for myself to reread as I was having a kind of craving for it. I love that we think that much alike. Early, my mother also sent me a Lush gift card which I haven't used yet but have ideas for.

Tomorrow if the weather's nice, I will head out to the zoo and then next week will be odd but good. None of the last days are actually full days so Friday really was my last full day of school. It was a nice day, chaotic and fun and it struck me how I've made an impression, the head of maintenance just kept talking to me about the history of the school and his experiences. And after work when I was eating a sandwich, two high school kids saw me and checked in. I think that might have been because one I was gone for so long and two because my eyes watering and contacts being horrible made it seem like I might have been crying. Other people checked in with me too, it was a good day. I'll probably have more feelings as time goes on but for now, I can look back at this year and be thankful for what I've learned and the trust put in me by the kids and others at the school. Wherever I go next, I'm to quote Wicked changed for good.

I realized due to heading off on my roadtrip that I never got around to writing up last Friday's fics and I ended up doing some this Friday as well. Its going to be a long list.
